Group Assignment Report: Introduction To Business

The document discusses how demand for medical masks changed with the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. It analyzes how demand increased dramatically as people feared and stockpiled masks. This caused mask shortages and price increases. To address this, mask producers increased production by hiring more workers, implementing overtime, and improving mask designs. Production capacity was expanded to meet rising demand and ensure adequate mask supplies for the public during the health crisis.

I. Context of product
Medical mask products
 A few things about the product and its use:
Medical masks are often used in the medical field because of their antibacterial,
convenient and safe properties. The most common material of medical masks is
nonwoven fabric with Polypropylene, besides polycarbonate, polyethylene,
polyester... Medical masks are considered as a protective mask with the aim of
supporting the prevention of bacteria and viruses for users. In addition, this
type of mask also has the effect of helping to prevent ordinary dust from
affecting the respiratory tract. Mask products are a common consumer item,
popular in daily life.
 In December 2019, the epidemic has not yet appeared:
 Before the coronavirus appeared in China, the mask situation was not scarce,
the price was moderate. Price doesn't govern much of the consumer behavior of
customers. Because the price of this popular product is very popular, public,
and at an acceptable customer level.
 Usually, medical masks can be found in any pharmacy or retail stores.
 Customers at this time: With the tropical climate in our country hot all year
round, in addition to severe environmental pollution, smog all over the way.
Therefore, masks are an item that has become essential for women; compared
to women, men often do not pay attention to having to wear a sugar mask to
avoid dirt; in addition, this is the most important item for medical staff.
 Design: the design is simple, there is only one style along with a few simple
colors
II. Analyzing how the demand change
  As of December 2019, the Sar-Cov outbreak broke out in China and began to
spread to countries in the region. Vietnam is one of the countries seriously
affected by the high rate of spread of the virus. In the early stages of the
epidemic, people were psychologically afraid, bewildered because Sar-Cov is a
new and very dangerous strain of the virus, thus causing the phenomenon of
people speculating, hoarding medical masks. Because medical masks are items
to protect themselves as well as the community from the most effective
respiratory infection epidemic in the time when people have not been
vaccinated, this increases the need to buy and sell, so there is a shortage of
medical masks in most retail distribution locations such as pharmacies,
supermarkets, grocery stores,...
 The scarcity also caused the price of the product to rise abnormally.
 So far, the epidemic has been controlled, the price of medical masks has
dropped back to less than 50% compared to the peak of the epidemic and the
supply of masks is no longer as scarce as before.

III. Solution for the changes

Facing the shortage of masks, enterprises focused on increasing the production

of masks, supplementing the workforce, increasing labor intensity to meet the needs of
the people.

 Inventory levels: Because of the sudden emergence of the braiding situation,

businesses cannot predict the demand will increase dramatically, so the level of
medical mask reserves is not high. In the face of that severe scarcity,
businesses can only expand production to provide timely supply to consumers,
do not store later.
 Changing the number of workers: In times of stress of the epidemic, it is
extremely important to provide adequate masks to the people. Therefore, the
addition of labor for the production of this medical mask is extremely
necessary. However, enterprises only add a moderate level, avoiding the
number of employees increasing too much but not enough tools and machines
to produce.
 Part-time employers: Enterprises can use temporary labor for simple stages of
production. Because of the epidemic, the number of informal workers
increases, so the use of temporary labor gives businesses more flexibility in
production.
 Changes in labor intensity: When the demand for production increases,
enterprises can implement an out-of-regulation overtime policy for workers
depending on state regulations or the capacity of machinery and equipment of
the enterprise.

Due to the great increase in the demand for customers using masks, these days
workers of mask manufacturing enterprises have to increase their shifts,
increase working hours. Inside factories depending on the scale, an average of
more than 20 workers are divided into two continuous cutting and sewing lines,
producing an average of about 50,000 masks per day. With the amount of
fabric produced and supplied 7-8 tons / day, enterprises can produce more than
300,000 masks per day, respectively. However, the average production
capacity of companies and enterprises is currently only fluctuating at 50,000
products per day, so in addition to increasing the labor force, it is necessary to
increase the number of working hours to be able to meet market demand.

 About production improvement: The demand is increasing rapidly, businesses

also need to invest more in the design, materials to upgrade and improve this
product

The basic cloth mask product is a 2-layer mask, of which one layer is
antibacterial fabric. Many enterprises have upgraded the production of 3-layer,
4-layer cloth face coverings. In addition to the antibacterial layer there may be
an additional layer of water-resistant, droplet-resistant fabric.

In the early days, cloth face coverings were made of soft fabric so it may not be
convenient for users, long wear finds it difficult to breathe, when talking, the
mask deforms according to the voice, there is not very polite. The latter types
of cloth face coverings are shaped fixed, thereby creating space in front of the
nose, easier to breathe and not deformed when the user speaks.
Businesses also have improvements in straps and nasal splints so that users can
use masks for a long time, ensuring that the mask fits snugly to the face,
improving the shielding and filtering effect of masks.
