Castañeros, JP - Laboratory Exercise 3
Castañeros, JP - Laboratory Exercise 3
I. Theoretical Background
A structure is anything that is composed of several parts that are put together.
In irrigation engineering, these structures are primarily the dams, headworks, open
channels and water flow control devices. In this laboratory exercise, you are tasked to
analyze the gap between the needs for major irrigation structures and the number of
units that are available and functional in your home province. Name your province (ex.
Leyte, Southern Leyte, Eastern Samar, Bohol, Cebu, etc.) then make a gap analysis for
irrigation structures based on the potential irrigation service area in your home
province and other important parameters that are appropriate for the location.
1. To identify the major irrigation structures needed in your home province like, but
not limited to, the following:
a) High head dam, with head greater than 15 meters;
b) Small water impounding project (SWIP), with 5-15 m head and service area of
25-150 hectares based on BAFS standard
c) Spillway;
d) Primary canal;
e) Secondary canal;
f) Reservoir;
III. Methodology
Materials:
1. Computer or mobile phone with internet connection;
2. Provincial profile;
3. Any document reflecting irrigation structures installed in your home province, their
respective locations and service areas;
4. Any document reflecting the hectarage of irrigable area in your home province by
municipality or city; and
5. Photographs and fact sheets/reports of the irrigation structures installed in your
home province by municipality or city.
Procedure
1. Read/view selected instructional materials listed under references below to have
more knowledge about irrigation structures.
2. Gather from the internet or any available source the following information in your
home province:
a) Potential irrigable rice area (hectares) by municipality or city
b) Name of irrigation structure(s) needed and the corresponding number
of units needed and installed.
c) Total number of hectares of rice field served
d) Gap between structure units needed and installed
3. Make an Irrigation Structure Gaps Analysis Matrix for your home province.
4. Recommend strategies to undertake for the Provincial LGU to increase the
hectarage of irrigated rice area in your home province considering the possible factors
like technical, financial, political, socio-economic, etc.
Province: Leyte
It is known that leyte has a lot of water, given the information in the previous laboratory
research. As a result, wider areas may potentially be irrigated. But since possible irrigable
area in all areas would be much bigger than the amount specified by the existing irrigation
facilities, larger irrigation systems must be built to allow for some further development.
Fortunately, although information on irrigation systems in the province of Leyte is limited,
this can be presumed what the region really involves. Underlying principles about the
required structures can be made based on previously defined data, such as the fact that
Leyte has a lot of water potential thanks to the various rivers that run through the
province, as mentioned in the previous lab article.
V. Lifelong Learnings
This laboratory exercise taught and maketh me impossible to get a fuller
understanding of the Leyte province irrigation systems. It is in continuation on the
previous activity, this study gives me more knowledge and enlighten me more about
the current situation of the irrigation systems of my province. And as a future
Agricultural ans Biosystems Engineer this study is very important for me, to fully
understand the various sources of irrigation and where irrigation is needed in a specific
area is critical in our profession, as the primary goal is to link the following areas.
