CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

A. Introduction
Language has become the most important aspect of communication. Language helps
human to communicate. Besides its main purpose, language is distinguished by geographical,
cultural, and historical. By speaking in the same language, human could communicate nicely
and share such as information clearly. It is necessary for a human to be able to communicate

background and a clear reasoning. English has been used by the ancient rome as a common
language and English has been the most used language in the world.
English has been playing the main part in several sectors including medicine,
engineering, and education, etc. English is a vital language for all kinds of professional and
personal goals. In engineering, English can be defined as its mother language. English has been
used for such a long time, therefore there are many studies and knowledges written or spoken
with English, especially in engineering. As an engineer it is necessary to have a basic skill of
using English for communicate either speaking or writing. Due to the references, knowledges
and its globally used.

3. Knows the importance of English for engineers.
4. Knows how to improve English skill.
CHAPTER II
DISCUSSION

1. What is the importance of language for communication?

Language is a tool to interact or tools to communicate, in a sense, means to convey
thoughts, ideas, concepts, or even a feeling. The concept that language is a tool to convey
the thought has had a long history. Language as a system, which means that formed by a
number of components that are fixed and can be patterned. As a system, in addition to the
systematic language are also systemic. Systematic meaning, language arranged according
to a certain pattern, not arranged randomly or arbitrarily. While systematic means that
language is a single system, but rather consist of several subsystems that differ from other
languages. Language commonly considered unique but universal at the same time. (Rabiah,
2018).
Language has a various define of its function. Pranowo in Halliday (1996:63) classify
the function of language based on the concept beyond the language function as other experts
do. They classify it into seven functions as follows:
1) instrumental function is the function of the language used to manipulate the
environment that led to a particular situation.
2) regulatory function is the use of language that serves to control an event, such as
approval, rejection, etc.
3) the representational function of language that serves to make a statement, present
the facts, etc.
4) the use of interactional function of language serves to maintain the relationship in
order to keep communications running smoothly, delivering jokes, master jargon,
idioms used by the particular conversational partner.
5) heuristic function is the function of the language that is used to acquire knowledge
in order to recognize the environment, such as a child wondering about what is seen.
6) personal function, namely the use of language that serves to express feelings,
emotions, personality, etc.
7) The function of the imaginative use of language that serve to create a system or be
imaginative ideas

2. How English has become a global language?

English as a world language is not merely an international language. The notion of
international language can be understood as a language which is used in any international
communication which involves people from two or more countries. English is used by
people of different first languages. It is not only applied when people speak to English
people, but also used when people from different nations meet. English is the most widely
spoken language in very different contexts in the world. Therefore, English is not only an
international language, but also a global language. (Rohmah, 2005).
A language gains a status as a global language when it has a special role that is
recognized in every country in the world (Crystal,1997). The global language can be spoken
as either first, second or foreign language. The prominent characteristic of a global
language is that it is the most widely used language in communication in most places in the
world.
Special status given to English by other countries can be in the form of using English
as a second language (ESL) and English as a foreign language (EFL). As a second language,
English is spoken by people in the countries as the official language. English is used as a
means of communication in various contexts such as government, the law courts, the media,
and the educational system. There are more than seventy countries that place English as a
second language (Crystal, 1997).

3. Why English is important for engineers?

English as a global language is important for engineers because of its used as language
that used on an international scientific literaturs, references and discussion. Engineering as
one of the physics field need to be able used internationally. Before become an engineer,
someone need to study about engineering. Engineering students need to read many
literatures to maintain the knowledge of engineering. Many references and literatures about
engineering are available in English. Therefore, engineers need to understand English.
Besides English used for literatures and references, English is important for engineers
to build a relationship and developing engineering skill. In this globalization era, having a
good communication and being skillful is important for maintain self-development.
Engineers are related to technologies and nowadays technologies are using English for the
basic instructions and development.(Hutomo, 2021).

4. How to improve English skill?

As mentioned before, that is so important and gives a lot of benefits for engineer. To
be able to speak English, we need to improve our english so we can communicate properly.
There are five ways to improve our english, which are
1. Enjoyment When they enjoy English and also when they like learning knowledge of
the language, namely grammar and structure. This statement shows that pleasure tends
to contribute to the speed of learning English. (Rintaningrum, 2016)
2. Persistence This statement shows that students tend to improve their skills in English if
they persistently learn English. Learning involves wanting to learn, trying to learn
English and never giving up learning English. (Rintaningrum, 2016)
3. Importance This statement shows that awareness of the importance of the English
language tends to help speed up language learning. (Rintaningrum, 2016)
4. Yourself Teaching Muscles is not a way that makes it easy for students to learn English.
This learner is a self-starter who maintains his intrinsic motivation which makes
learning easier for him. He has an intrinsic interest in the task and performs self-
evaluation to check whether his understanding of his concepts is correct.
(Rintaningrum, 2016)
5. Practicing in a Different Context The results of the interviews show that learning
English through the process of teaching English to others tends to help students learn
English easily. Moreover, teaching practice provides an opportunity to put ideas into
practice. In addition, more opportunities can be obtained if respondents have jobs as
English lecturers because they have to teach, prepare material and study theory,
knowledge or materials before teaching to be implemented in practice. (Rintaningrum,
2016)
CHAPTER III
CONCLUSION
3.1. Conclusion
Language is important in communication. Language as a communication tool has a
lot of function. English became a global language because of historical reason and with
intents to make a communication between each countries get easier. English is
important for engineers due to the use of English for literatures and references on
engineering. Engineers need to have a good relationship and a broad knowledge.
Therefore, engineers need to have a basic knowledge on English. There are many ways
for engineers to improve their English skill, so they could have a good English skill in
listening, writing, reading, and speakin, etc.
