PART – B: Micro-Project Report

TITAL :Collect the information of robotics

1.0 Rational

Robotics is an interdisciplinary branch of computer science and engineering. Robotics

involves design, construction, operation, and use of robots. The goal of robotics is to
design machines that can help and assist humans. Robotics integrates fields
of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, information
engineering, mechatronics, electronics, bioengineering, computer engineering, control
engineering, software engineering, mathematics, etc.

Robotics develops machines that can substitute for humans and replicate human
actions. Robots can be used in many situations for many purposes, but today many are
used in dangerous environments (including inspection of radioactive materials, bomb
detection and deactivation), manufacturing processes, or where humans cannot
survive (e.g. in space, underwater, in high heat, and clean up and containment of
hazardous materials and radiation). Robots can take on any form, but some are made
to resemble humans in appearance. This is claimed to help in the acceptance of robots
in certain replicative behaviors which are usually performed by people. Such robots
attempt to replicate walking, lifting, speech, cognition, or any other human activity.
Many of today's robots are inspired by nature, contributing to the field of bio-inspired
robotics.
Certain robots require user input to operate while other robots function autonomously.

The concept of creating robots that can operate autonomously dates back to classical

times, but research into the functionality and potential uses of robots did not grow
substantially until the 20th century. Throughout history, it has been frequently
assumed by various scholars, inventors, engineers, and technicians that robots will one
day be able to mimic human behavior and manage tasks in a human-like fashion.
Today, robotics is a rapidly growing field, as technological advances continue;
researching, designing, and building new robots serve various practical purposes,
whether domestically, commercially, or militarily. Many robots are built to do jobs
that are hazardous to people, such as defusing bombs, finding survivors in unstable
ruins, and exploring mines and shipwrecks. Robotics is also used
in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) as a teaching aid.
2.0 Aim of Micro-project

 Collect the information of robotics.

3.0 Course outcomes

 We are able to know the information robotics.
 We got the knowledge about robotics.
 Every step has a clear focus on educating us.

3.1 Proposed Methodology

 To make some research on the topic.

 To take guideline to subject teacher about the project.
 To prepare Proposal of project.
 To collect required resources.
 To prepare report.
 To submit Report of the project.
4.0 Literature Review

Machine learning and robotics intersect in a field known as robot learning. Robot

learning is the study of techniques that enable a robot to acquire new knowledge or
skills through machine learning algorithms.
Some applications that have been explored by robot learning include grasping objects,
object categorization and even linguistic interaction with a human peer. Learning can
happen through self-exploration or via guidance from a human operator.
To learn, intelligent robots must accumulate facts through human input or sensors.
Then, the robot's processing unit will compare the newly acquired data to previously
stored information and predict the best course of action based on the data it has
acquired.
However, it's important to understand that a robot can only solve problems that it is
built to solve. It does not have general analytical abilities.

Robotics Applications

1. Arc Welding

Arc welding, or robot welding, became commonplace in the 1980s. One of the driving
forces for switching to robot welding is improving the safety of workers from arc burn
and inhaling hazardous fumes.
2. Spot Welding

Spot welding joins two contacting metal surfaces by directing a large current through
the spot, which melts the metal and forms the weld delivered to the spot in a very
short time (approximately ten milliseconds).

3. Materials Handling

Material handling robots are utilized to move, pack and select products. They also can
automate functions involved in the transferring of parts from one piece of equipment
to another. Direct labor costs are reduced and much of the tedious and hazardous
activities traditionally performed by human labor are eliminated.

4. Machine Tending
Robotic automation for machine tending is the process of loading and unloading raw
materials into machinery for processing and overseeing the machine while it does a
job.

5. Painting

Robotic painting is used in automotive production and many other industries as it

increases the quality and consistency of the product. Cost savings are also realized
through less rework.

6. Picking, Packing and Palletizing

Most products are handled multiple times prior to final shipping. Robotic picking and
packaging increases speed and accuracy along with lowering production costs.

7. Assembly
Robots routinely assemble products, eliminating tedious and tiresome tasks. Robots
increase output and reduce operational costs.

8. Mechanical Cutting, Grinding, Deburring and Polishing

Building dexterity into robots provides a manufacturing option that is otherwise very
difficult to automate. An example of this is the production of orthopedic implants,
such as knee and hip joints. Buffing and polishing a hip joint by hand can normally
take 45-90 minutes while a robot can perform the same function in just a few minutes.

9. Gluing, Adhesive Sealing and Spraying Materials

Sealer robots are built with numerous robotic arm configurations that enable the robot
to apply adhesives to any type of product. The primary benefit in this application is
increased quality, speed and consistency of the final product.

10. Other Processes

These include inspection, water jet cutting and soldering robots.
Advantages Of Robotics:-
There are several advantages of Robotics and some particular advantages are
mentioned below,

 Increase efficiency :- Robots can complete certain tasks faster and more efficiently
than humans as they are designed and built to perform them with higher accuracy.

 Long Working Hours:- You can employ robots in places where it is risky for
humans to handle jobs. They can work continuously for months together without a
break, maintenance and are considered to be more productive than
people. Humans go nuts and their brains stop working when they work without a
break and sleep. However, robots can work without sleep and break.

 Respective and dangerous tasks:- Some tasks are deemed as too dangerous or

laborious and repetitive for humans to carry out and so instead robots can perform
these tasks instead. Working conditions, therefore, can be vastly improved as well
as the safety within factories and production plants by introducing industrial
robots.

 New Jobs:- With its progression, it churns out new jobs as people need to design
and fix the issues in robots as well. Robots can work round the clock without
getting tired. This is one of the advantages of robotics.

Disadvantages of Robotics:-
All things comes with its pros and cons. There are several disadvantages of Robotics
and some particular disadvantages are mentioned below,

 Higher Cost & Continues supply power:- This is one of the disadvantages of

robotics. Robots consume a lot of power to function. Robots need to be maintained
continuously to keep them in good condition. You would need to invest a huge
amount of money to buy robots. On top of this, to develop software to make it
function as per your needs would cost even more also implementing industrial
robots can incur a high capital as well.
 Unemployment:- If robotics comes into trend, then many skillful workers would
also lose their jobs and would be on roads, which is one of the disadvantages of
robotics. Many daily wage workers would lose their jobs, which are actually the
bread and butter of their families.
 Dangerous:- Robots can also be dangerous to humans when they malfunction or
designed to work for warfare and some of the countries have already started using
robots in wars in various forms.
 Emotionless:- Robots can never interact like humans, as they lack empathy, which
is one of the disadvantages of robotics. If Robotics comes in to the force them in
various parts of the personalized services human touch will be always missing.
