Class average age (in months)

6 months to 12 months

Primary Objective & Infant/Toddler Standards:

Five to eight months

● Explores everything with hands and mouth.

Secondary Objective & Infant Toddler Standard:

Language development
Understands and communicates
● Uses voice to express happiness and unhappiness.

Experience description:
Clear bags were filled with small colored ice cubes and taped to the floor. Infants were encouraged, invited
and allowed to feel the shape of the cubes, the icy cold textures and see the different colors.

Materials
● Ice cubes
● Clear bags
● Tape
● Food coloring

Scaffolding (child’s prior knowledge to build on):

I will model sitting on the floor and touching the ice bags, I will use verbal and nonverbal encouragement to
invite children to join my play, once children show interest and come over to play, I will stay back and
observe and interact when needed.

Plan for carrying out experience (what caregiver will do):

My plan is to add food coloring to an ice trays with water to make colored ice cubes the day before the
experience, with enough ice to fill two big bags. In the infant room there is a small area where the floor is
clear of carpet. I'm planning to tape the ice cubes bags to the hard floor. Sit on the floor and invite infants to
come over and play, I will start playing with the bags to call children attention. And observe children's
reactions.

Assessment
A. How would you be able to determine the success of this activity?
I will be able to determine the success of the experience by children's body language, and sounds of
excitement. If infants try to reach for ice bags, touch and put ice bags in their mouth they are telling me they
are interested.

B. Do you feel children’s knowledge based on this experience? (Do I see this new knowledge
being learned in other areas)
I believe this experience can be used in many ways such us; language development and new vocabulary. It
could be used as an outdoor activity as sensory water play, and cognitive development by teaching and
letting infants explore and use their senses.
