which provided an inspection of the fuel feed line connecting the low-pressure
fuel pump to the direct injection fuel pump for damage and/or leakage. If the
inspection revealed fuel feed line damage and/or fuel leakage, the fuel tube
was replaced. If the fuel feed line did not show signs of damage and/or fuel
leak, heat resistant tape was applied at the connection between the low-

Chronology :
February 2022
On February 15, 2022, NASO’s Data Review Committee (“DRC”) reviewed warranty claims reporting leaking
fuel on certain 2013-2014 model year Hyundai Sonata vehicles that had received the tape remedy associated
with Recall 189 (Safety Recall 20V-121). The DRC noted that Kia had recently announced a recall to address a
similar condition on certain 2013-2014 model year Kia Optima vehicles that were repaired under Kia Safety
Recall 187. DRC determined to open an investigation for NASO’s Technical Review Committee’s (“NASO’s
TRC”) evaluation.
March 2022
NASO’s TRC conducted a study of warranty part returns and communicated its findings in a Quality
Information Report (“QIR”) sent to HMC on March 23, 2022. Through examination of incident parts, NASO
observed varied conditions in which the tape and zip-tie were applied in Recall 189’s remedy, as well as fuel
tubes with the remedy components missing. Evidence of fuel leakage from fuel tubes with the tape and zip-tie
