THE 9TH ASIAN CONTEST OF
ARCHITECTURAL ROOKIES AWARD

Organizer: AUA, SOUTHEAST UNIVERSITY

https://www.aua.world

The objective of the Asian contest of the Architectural Rookie's Award

is to review, judge, and evaluate architectural works and ideas created
by students studying architectural designs in universities in Asia.
As architecture is primarily based oncultures, this contest offers a great
opportunity for students to mutually understand and share different
cultures through their respective architectural styles. Having such an
opportunity will also contribute to students’ education by exposing them
to the cultural diversity in Asia.

We all hope that the Asian Contest of the Architectural Rookie’ s Award
can be a place where talented students and committee members gather,
discuss and evaluate works, and consider architectural education and
modern architecture in Asia. Through this contest, it is greatly expected
that participating students will actively take part in architectural culture
and modern architecture in Asia and then be successful in driving
architecture globally.

3. Sharing academic accumulation on Asian architecture
Japan's ‘controversy of tradition’ has not spread to Asia, where Japan should have been
greatly influenced, and it remains an issue that the discussion is limited to the contrast
between the West and Japan.
AUA will expand the discussion and interpretation of traditional architecture to Asia, compile
the contents of the ‘controversy of tradition’ in Asia as a whole with reference to Japan's
experience, and utilize it for the education of future contemporary architecture in Asia.

First, as a preparatory step, the AUA classifies Asian architecture into four categories from a
new perspective and summarizes them according to the following criteria. Then, we will
systematize the Asian architecture selected in each country with simple and clear comments

In addition, Kunio Maekawa, who influenced Tange and Isozaki, thought that the identity of
modern Japanese architecture would be reached by bringing out a sense of design and high
quality inherent in traditional Japanese architecture and drawing it to the side of modernism
and merging it.
The controversy over tradition in Japan begins with <how to define the identity of Japanese
architecture in a rapidly changing society>, and goes through the process of <how to define
Japaneseness without going back to the past>. And various discussions were held with <how
to fuse Western modernism and tradition> as an exit, and many architectural works were
created to prove it.
The direction of modern architecture, which is guided through the above-mentioned tradi-
tional controversy, is a subject that should be seriously tackled in Asian countries, but if it
progresses in Asia as a whole, the future modern Asian architecture will be rich in diversity. Taian (teahouse) Osaka City Central Public Hall

As architecture is primarily based on cultures, ACARA has offered a great opportunity for
students to mutually understand and share different cultures through their respective archi-
tectural works. Having such an opportunity will also contribute to students’ education by
exposing them to the cultural diversity in Asia.
When we look at the works of Asian students, we can see the direction of architectural educa-
tion in that country. <Architectural education> in Asia is to foster young architects who can
understand their own culture and create high-quality contemporary Asian architecture. To
1th ACARA 2nd ACARA 4th ACARA that end, improving the quality of architectural education is a major issue.
Every year, 4000 to 5000 students have applied for the domestic contests to select represen-
tatives from each country, and about 25 representatives have been selected. In total, we can
see that around 40,000 students have been involved in this contest, but it is the educational
achievement of the ACARA that they paid attention to this contest and have shared works
and experience.
Furthermore, the contents of this contest have recorded through facebook Youtube, booklet,
etc. have had a ripple effect on design education in Asia.
The ripple effect of ACARA will trigger new efforts by Asian universities to improve architec-
3rd ACARA 5th ACARA (co-winner) 5th ACARA (co-winner) tural education.

I would like to take up sample architectural works and design assignments in each country,
deepen the discussion of architectural education in Asia as a whole, and establish the stan-
dard of architectural education in Asia.

In the future, if Asian architectural culture can be researched and systematized, and ACARA
can be held with the same design assignments in Asian universities, it will be possible to
realize the mobility of Asian architecture.
As a result, I would like to expect unique to Asia contemporary architecture that expresses
6th ACARA 7th ACARA 8th ACARA the diversity of Asia that we have never seen before.

WORKSHOP THEME Fuzimiao
The Challenge of Mass Tourism
on Cultural Heritages
Nanjing

SOUTHEAST UNIVERSITY

CHINA
Overall of the Site
Nanjing Fuzimiao (Chinese: 南京夫子庙 ) , or Confucian Temple (Chinese: 夫子庙 ), is a Confucius Temple and former site of imperial
examination hall located on banks of Qinhuai River in southern Nanjing, a historical city and former capital in eastern China. Today,
Fuzimiao is a popular tourist attraction with pedestrian shopping streets around the restored temple buildings. This world-famous group of
architecture now receives more than 55 million tourists annually while the Lantern Festival Carnival in Fuzimiao attracts more than 600
thousand people on the single day.

History and Heritages

In 317 during Jin Dynasty, Nanjing Imperial University was founded on northern bank of Qinhuai River but was destroyed in several
decades. In 1034, Confucius Temple was constructed on the former site of Jin ‘s imperial university, which has been called Fuzimiao
(Confucian Temple) since then, along with Nanjing Fuxue (university of state capital). The place became the imperial university in 1365
when Nanjing was the capital of Ming Dynasty in the early years, and became again the campus of Fuxue 16 years later since Beijing
turned into the new capital. During Qing Dynasty (1636-1912), there were two Xianxue (county school) in Fuzimiao area, they were
destroyed during the war of peasant uprising in 1850s and were reconstructed by the authority in 1869. During World War II, Fuzimiao
area was burned down in 1937, only few buildings survived. The destroyed part was rebuilt in 1980s. Currently, the remaining ancient
buildings include Mingyuan Building and Feihong Bridge (both built in 15th century), both are reserved in museum.

Challenges of Mass Tourism

The Fuzimiao area has a long tradition being a marketing place severing the scholars since Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Originally there
were only stores of book and writing materials, general merchandise, hotels and brothels gradually appeared later. During the latter
centuries, the market had been in continuous expansion, gradually got rid of dependence on scholars in the late Qing Dynasty and
became one of the biggest business zones in Nanjing. It was not until 1985 that the market returned to glory after grand restoration by the
government, and became a world-famous pedestrian shopping street, it has been ranked as one of the most popular destinations in
national holidays as well. Despite such commercial success owe to mass tourism, the area has been criticized as “destroying traditional
culture” due to over-commercialization and decline of traditional characters. New buildings constructed in this area copy Chinese ancient
style for attraction, yet to represent the original character and beauty. Local residents are moving out, stores of characteristic handmade
crafts are replaced by factory-made souvenirs, traditional business and life in this historic area are fading as a result if fast-moving
consumer commerce, negligence on conventional reservation and mass tourism.

Kashi-Banaras-Varanasi A city older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend, and looks twice as old as all of them put
together” is located in eastern part of Uttar Pradesh, India. With each name there came a different belief and ideology which has shaped
the current day Varanasi. Situated on western banks of river Ganga it spreads between two rivers, Varuna in the north and Assi is the
south which coins the name Varanasi. Core city developed after second century B.C on the west part. The city is deeply related to
worshipping of river ganga and a place for pilgrims. Riverfront ghats comprises of 84 ghats behind which city is growing in pockets having
their own charm and culture. The city is so overwhelming, where streets acts are binders between houses and not divider embracing
anyone in its ancient ,modern and progressive way together.

History and Heritages

Varanasi is known for Ganges and Ghats but there is more to it, the life behind ghats, temples and streets is real heritage of the city.
Culture is not just a single line defining the materiality of physical elements but it lies in the values, traditions and practices taught to us by Map showing area of study along river

are temporary but the belief is constant. The history of evolving city is carved and painted on each canvas may it be mythological, cultural
or any other form. Varanasi is place were the arc of life is complete. Here death is not a taboo but a celebration where many old people
visit Varanasi, stay over there till their last breathe keeping behind their ordinary life. Ghats carry a very different life apart from core city,
with different activities and culture like, boat making, holy bath, different rituals on the banks by sage, local vendors etc. tourists attraction
towards these and a change is heritage from old ashram to a hotel has evolved overtime.

Challenges of Mass Tourism

River banks which comprises of several activities faces various problems of pollution caused due cremation which generates air pollution
at high rates producing harmful gases from dead bodies which are released in the river polluting the same. These have affected the natural
resources. The sewage generated is also deposited into the holy river polluting it. Increase in waste littering by the tourists have increased
the level of waste collection near the banks. Many initiatives have been implemented to improve and develop the infrastructure under
various projects like green ganga, corridor project etc. Narrow streets has created congestion of traffic both vehicular and pedestrian along
with animals roaming. Due to increase in tourism certain alterations are done specific to ghats like lights on ghats, paintings and carvings
on canvas, fort to a tourist hotels or cafes which attracts more tourists. Riverfront development is a vast upcoming challenge for the City
and its people.

WORKSHOP THEME Chinatown (Singapore) 1. Map of the area before it was named as Chinatown

Singapore

SINGAPORE
Overall of the Site
Chinatown is an ethnic enclave located within Singapore’s Central Area, accommodating only 90
hectares of Singapore’s Central Business District area of 1874 hectares. It was originally
conceived by Sir Stamford Raffles to be a settlement for Chinese immigrants. Each dialect group
of the same provincial origin occupied a different sector. The Cantonese settled in Temple Street
and Mosque Street; the Hokkiens settled in Telok Ayer Street; and the Teochews settled in South
Canal Road and Carpenter Street.

In present day, Chinatown is a watered down version of its once vibrant past - from its now neat
arrangement of shophouses and pop-up stalls to the items they sell. The walkways are larger to
accommodate the influx of tourists visiting Chinatown daily. Western influences have affected what
shops sell today, catered to the taste and preferences of tourists, rather than sticking to its own 2. Chinatown in the past (19th and 20th century)
cultural roots unique to Chinatown.

History and Heritages

Chinese immigrants first came to Singapore in the early 19th Century in search for a better life.
Settling down mostly at the South-West side of the Singapore river, they first formed Kreta Ayer.
Following through the 1822 Jackson masterplan and opening of harbour, today Chinatown is
comprised of 4 areas: Kreta Ayer, Telok Ayer, Bukit Pasoh and Tanjong Pagar, and is about
0.9km2 .

In it’s early years, Chinatown housed various Chinese merchants, coolies, samsui women and a
small number of Indians. Architecture had Chinese references which was gradually diluted due to
the colonial influence. It was a vibrant and bustling town for the Chinese community and housed
residences and various shops ranging from hawkers, brothels, peddlers to funeral parlours.
However, not everyone had an easy life. As the Chinese population grew rapidly, overcrowding 3. Chinatown now (21st century, 4. Chinatown during COVID-19:
became an issue. The poor lived in sub-divided cubicles within shophouses that were cramped before COVID-19) a need for tourism
and unhygienic. Inevitably, slums developed.

Challenges of Mass Tourism

Tourism has been a major contributor to the Singapore's economy, which contributes 4% to the
country's GDP in 2019. Chinatown, being one of the main tourist attraction in Singapore has seen
the reliance over tourism grow over the years. This has unfortunately resulted in the
commodification of its original heritage, which has skewed and replaced its authentic heritage with
one that seemingly appeals to tourists. Original tenants and vendors of the place have been forced
to relocate their businesses due to the increasing rental cost, which inevitably lead to the dilution
of Chinatown's heritage.

Tourists numbers have drastically dropped from 19.11 million in 2019 to 2.69 million in 2020 till
date. The current Covid-19 pandemic has drastically worsened the state of Chinatown today,
clearly highlighting how commercialized it is through the wipe out of tourists looking at its current
state. From once being flooded with tourists from all over the world, mostly from China and
Indonesia, it has now become a ghost town. The Singapore Tourism Board’s chief executive is
preparing for a ‘longer, slower recovery than Sars’, where the tourism sector took 7 to 8 months to
recover. It is painful to imagine how long Chinatown and other tourist spots would recover from the
shock of Covid-19, while many owners in Chinatown themselves wonder if it would ever.
