Taiwanese domestic contest for Rookie's Award was hold in Taoyuan City. Because of
Covid-19 situation, the participants of this year are half than last year. Even though, first
stage on 7/12, 7 young jurors picked up 15 nice works from 78 ones from 13 unversities
for final jury. Fortunately, because of well under control of Covid-19, we can hold
face-to-face contest in Taiwan. Second stage on 9/26, 7 jurors, 6 from Taiwan and Dr.
Lee, Youngil joined online, heard the presentations of all 15 works from 7 universities.
Under the contest topic “Culture, bridging region and history” , the 1st place work of
Taiwan domestic contest is by Huang, Ching-Chia, who is from Cheng Kung University.
Her work is highly complete that folds in the alleys beside Tainan Fine Art Museum,
conbined the old area and museum with architecture elements.
The recommendation of Dr. Lee, another representative is Tseng, Chin-Ya, who is from
Ming Chuan University. Her beautiful drawings show the special world of her, giving us a
warm and mysterious charm,
This year, the Taiwan rookie's award was organized by Ming Chuan University, but
despite the short time due to the sudden change of host school, it was a well-prepared
and well-produced competition. Thanks for Professor Jeanne Lee, the Dean of the
Architecture Department, and the executive committee members really did nice work for
this year.

3. Sharing academic accumulation on Asian architecture
Japan's ‘controversy of tradition’ has not spread to Asia, where Japan should have been
greatly influenced, and it remains an issue that the discussion is limited to the contrast
between the West and Japan.
AUA will expand the discussion and interpretation of traditional architecture to Asia, compile
the contents of the ‘controversy of tradition’ in Asia as a whole with reference to Japan's
experience, and utilize it for the education of future contemporary architecture in Asia.
First, as a preparatory step, the AUA classifies Asian architecture into four categories from a
new perspective and summarizes them according to the following criteria. Then, we will
systematize the Asian architecture selected in each country with simple and clear comments
Ise Shrine Katsura Imperial Villa and show the direction of Asian architecture while sharing its academic accumulation.
Taut regarded Katsura Imperial Villa as the highest in Japanese architecture, but his evalua- 1) Traditional architecture

In addition, Kunio Maekawa, who influenced Tange and Isozaki, thought that the identity of
modern Japanese architecture would be reached by bringing out a sense of design and high
quality inherent in traditional Japanese architecture and drawing it to the side of modernism
and merging it.
The controversy over tradition in Japan begins with <how to define the identity of Japanese
architecture in a rapidly changing society>, and goes through the process of <how to define
Japaneseness without going back to the past>. And various discussions were held with <how
to fuse Western modernism and tradition> as an exit, and many architectural works were
created to prove it.
The direction of modern architecture, which is guided through the above-mentioned tradi-
tional controversy, is a subject that should be seriously tackled in Asian countries, but if it
progresses in Asia as a whole, the future modern Asian architecture will be rich in diversity. Taian (teahouse) Osaka City Central Public Hall

Paulo Freire, who is educator and philosopher, describes two types of education. One is
<banking concept of education> and the other is <problem-solving education>. Even in
architectural design education, <banking concept of education> education in which only
<information> is transferred to an account to students interferes with the formation of
critical thinking and should be avoided. The true teaching of educators is not to give answers,
but to teach the right questions. You should look at the problem and emphasize how to solve
it through appropriate analysis and questions. The criticism of this education also applies to

As architecture is primarily based on cultures, ACARA has offered a great opportunity for
students to mutually understand and share different cultures through their respective archi-

exposing them to the cultural diversity in Asia.
When we look at the works of Asian students, we can see the direction of architectural educa-

understand their own culture and create high-quality contemporary Asian architecture. To

see that around 40,000 students have been involved in this contest, but it is the educational
achievement of the ACARA that they paid attention to this contest and have shared works
and experience.
Furthermore, the contents of this contest have recorded through facebook Youtube, booklet,

In the future, if Asian architectural culture can be researched and systematized, and ACARA

Kashi-Banaras-Varanasi A city older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend, and looks twice as old as all of them put
together” is located in eastern part of Uttar Pradesh, India. With each name there came a different belief and ideology which has shaped
the current day Varanasi. Situated on western banks of river Ganga it spreads between two rivers, Varuna in the north and Assi is the
south which coins the name Varanasi. Core city developed after second century B.C on the west part. The city is deeply related to
worshipping of river ganga and a place for pilgrims. Riverfront ghats comprises of 84 ghats behind which city is growing in pockets having
their own charm and culture. The city is so overwhelming, where streets acts are binders between houses and not divider embracing
anyone in its ancient ,modern and progressive way together.
River banks which comprises of several activities faces various problems of pollution caused due cremation which generates air pollution
at high rates producing harmful gases from dead bodies which are released in the river polluting the same. These have affected the natural
resources. The sewage generated is also deposited into the holy river polluting it. Increase in waste littering by the tourists have increased
the level of waste collection near the banks. Many initiatives have been implemented to improve and develop the infrastructure under
various projects like green ganga, corridor project etc. Narrow streets has created congestion of traffic both vehicular and pedestrian along
with animals roaming. Due to increase in tourism certain alterations are done specific to ghats like lights on ghats, paintings and carvings
on canvas, fort to a tourist hotels or cafes which attracts more tourists. Riverfront development is a vast upcoming challenge for the City
and its people.

Overall of the Site
Chinatown is an ethnic enclave located within Singapore’s Central Area, accommodating only 90
hectares of Singapore’s Central Business District area of 1874 hectares. It was originally
conceived by Sir Stamford Raffles to be a settlement for Chinese immigrants. Each dialect group
of the same provincial origin occupied a different sector. The Cantonese settled in Temple Street
and Mosque Street; the Hokkiens settled in Telok Ayer Street; and the Teochews settled in South
Canal Road and Carpenter Street.
In present day, Chinatown is a watered down version of its once vibrant past - from its now neat
arrangement of shophouses and pop-up stalls to the items they sell. The walkways are larger to
accommodate the influx of tourists visiting Chinatown daily. Western influences have affected what
shops sell today, catered to the taste and preferences of tourists, rather than sticking to its own 2. Chinatown in the past (19th and 20th century)
cultural roots unique to Chinatown.
In it’s early years, Chinatown housed various Chinese merchants, coolies, samsui women and a
small number of Indians. Architecture had Chinese references which was gradually diluted due to
the colonial influence. It was a vibrant and bustling town for the Chinese community and housed
residences and various shops ranging from hawkers, brothels, peddlers to funeral parlours.
However, not everyone had an easy life. As the Chinese population grew rapidly, overcrowding 3. Chinatown now (21st century, 4. Chinatown during COVID-19:
became an issue. The poor lived in sub-divided cubicles within shophouses that were cramped before COVID-19) a need for tourism
and unhygienic. Inevitably, slums developed.
Tourists numbers have drastically dropped from 19.11 million in 2019 to 2.69 million in 2020 till
date. The current Covid-19 pandemic has drastically worsened the state of Chinatown today,
clearly highlighting how commercialized it is through the wipe out of tourists looking at its current
state. From once being flooded with tourists from all over the world, mostly from China and
Indonesia, it has now become a ghost town. The Singapore Tourism Board’s chief executive is
preparing for a ‘longer, slower recovery than Sars’, where the tourism sector took 7 to 8 months to
recover. It is painful to imagine how long Chinatown and other tourist spots would recover from the
shock of Covid-19, while many owners in Chinatown themselves wonder if it would ever.
