Assignment-2: Building Materials & Construction Technology-Viii

The document discusses pre-cast construction and provides definitions and explanations of key terms. It examines the advantages and disadvantages of pre-cast construction, double wall construction, pre-cast truss walls, and sandwich panels. Specifically, it notes that pre-cast construction allows for rapid erection, quality control, and prestressing but requires careful connections and limits design flexibility. Double walls provide insulation and soundproofing but increase costs. Pre-cast truss walls incorporate floor supports, while sandwich panels offer insulation and fire resistance but have weaker joints.

1. What is pre-cast construction? Explain its advantages and disadvantages.
Ans: Precast construction is the manufacturing of products in a pre-made cast or
mold and then, after being cured in a controlled environment, transporting it to
the construction site for final assembly.

Advantages:

 Very rapid speed of erection

 Good quality control
 Entire building can be precast-walls, floors, beams, etc.
 Rapid construction on site
 High quality because of the controlled conditions in the factory
 Prestressing is easily done which can reduce the size and number of the
structural members.

  Disadvantages:

 Very heavy members

 Camber in beams and slabs
 Very small margin for error
 Connections may be difficult
 Somewhat limited building design flexibility
 Because panel size is limited, precast concrete cannot be used for two-way
structural systems.
 Economics of scale demand regularly shaped buildings.
 Need for repetition of forms will affect building design.
 Joints between panels are often expensive and complicated.
 Skilled workmanship is required in the application of the panel on site.
 Cranes are required to lift panels.

2. Explain the advantages, disadvantages and application of a) Double walls b)

Pre cast truss walls c) Sandwich panels.
Ans: Double walls application- The double wall has been used to build energy
efficient homes for a long time. While there are many ways to do it, the basic
premise is to build one structural wall (typically the inside wall), build a second
wall around it, and fill the space between with insulation.
First, there is single-wall construction which consists of interior framing,
exterior house wrap, and vertical siding. And then there is double-wall
construction which consists of interior framing, oriented strand board (OSB)

wall sheathing, exterior house wrap, and fiber cement lap or vinyl lap siding.
Both of these wall designs are considered to be one standard framed wall –
with each design layering the elements mentioned appropriately.
Advantages-
 It has several advantages over a conventional stick-frame wall: it provides
more room for insulation, reduces thermal bridging through the studs, and
avoids moisture problems that can arise from using vapor-impermeable
materials like foam board.
 Excellent air/vapor barrier support and noise reduction.
 Double-wall construction is considered to be “above grade”, or in other
words, a premium wall design.
 Many homeowners and builders choose the double-wall design because it
offers more structural integrity and for its exceptional energy performance.
Homes with this feature are known to use less electricity and heat.

Disadvantages-

 Higher construction cost.

 Fire protection.
 Reduction of rentable space.
 Extra maintenance and
operational costs.
 Overheating issues.
 Higher air flow velocity.
 More weight to the structure.
 Daylight hindrance.
 Acoustic insulation.
 Condensation
Pre-cast truss walls-
A pre-cast concrete wall system that incorporates a truss ledge for
positioning a building floor system at a below-grade location. The truss
ledge is defined by a vertical wall formed as a continuation of the exterior
wall of the wall panel extending from the footer beam to the upper bond

beam and projecting vertically above the upper bond beam to provide a
support surface for the building floor members.

Sandwich panels-
A sandwich panel is a product used to clad the walls and roofs of buildings.
Each panel comprises a core of thermoinsulating material, skinned on both
sides with sheet metal. Sandwich panels are not structural materials but
curtain materials. The structural forces are carried by the steel framework or
other carrier frame to which the sandwich panels are attached.

Advantages-
 Excellent fire performance
 Include a high degree of thermal insulation, sound insulation, high speed
erection of buildings, light weight, resistance to biological effects, no
additional finishing, the use of the premises of food Industry.

Disadvantages-
 One of the main disadvantages of the application of sandwich panels in parts
involving large in-plane stresses is the relative low strength of the joints of
the individual welded I-core panels. At these joints it is only possible with
relative high fabrication costs and time consuming techniques to connect the
cores of the sandwich panels.
 The low resistance of the shell plates in case of impact loads and local
(point) loads, the low shear strength of the core (metal or polymer) of the
sandwich panel and the panel joints as well as the low freedom in structural
design.
