Mathematical Practices Through a Statistical Lens
Answer the following:
1.Can the question be answered with data? Answer: Statistical literacy involves an understanding of the definitions, procedures and key concepts of statistical inquiry. Statistical reasoning requires the use of of logic to make conclusion about the context the statistical tools to describe. In the statistical thinking the student incorporates the overall investigative process like making/asking a question, creating a data collection or choosing how to analyze the data. 2.Will answering statistical question provide insight into the research topic under investigation? Answer: In the statistical inquiry, the investigative question is the statistical question or problem that needs to be answered or solved. In most instances, the investigative question starts from wide –ranging or general question and then develops into a precise question. The process of developing the investigation is iterative and requires considerable work to get it right. There is also a need when developing the investigative to have an understanding of the difference between a question that anticipates a deterministic answer and a question that anticipates answer based on data that vary. 3.Will the data collection plan measure a variable /variables that provide appropriate data to address the statistical question? Answer:as part of statistical problem-solving process, students when carrying out the analysis, should be asking questions about their statistics, graphs, and tables. Abstract and quantitative reasoning is vital for exploring and interpreting data in a context.Statistical modeling allows the quantifying of variability by looking for structure in the data distribution.thus,it is important to ask good analysis question that can lead to precision in knowing which graphicl display or statistic to use for summarizing the data distribution and subsequently hor to eport and interpret the observation made about the distribution.Once the date collection is complete for the previous survey question on extra- curricular activitie, the possing of possible analysis are follows. Even after the collection and analysis of all the survey data, interogation is important to check that the information avaible providesanswer to the investigat 4.Does the plan provide data that allow for generalization of results to a population or to establish a cause and effect conclusion? Answer: Yes. Because one of the main characteristics of a quantitative research is Project can be used to generalize concepts more widely, predict future results, or investigate causal relationships. 5.Do the analysis provide useful information for addressing the statistical question? Are they appropriate for the data that have been collected? Answer: Quantitative data are more credible, reliable, and useful than qualitative data. The research study cannot be replicated or repeated because it is unique in every case. Data are in the form of numbers and analyzed statistically. Data analysis is an on-going process.
6.Is the interpretation sound ,given how the data collected?
Answer: Figuring out what data means is just as important as collecting it. Even if the data collection process is sound, data can be misinterpreted. When interpreting data, the data user must not only attempt to discern the differences between causality and coincidence, but also must consider all possible factors that may have led to a result .
7.Does the interpretation provide an adequate answer to the statistical question?
Answer: Data interpretation is part of daily life for most people. Interpretation is the process of making sense of numerical data that has been collected, analyzed, and presented. A common method of assessing numerical data is known as statistical analysis , and the activity of analyzing and interpreting data in order to make predictions is known as inferential statistics . Informed consumers recognize the importance of judging the reasonableness of data interpretations and predictions by considering sources of bias such as sampling procedures or misleading questions, margins of error , confidence intervals , and incomplete interpretations.
