 INTERNATIONAL DAY OF GIRLS IN ICT
The event, celebrated all over the world on 28th April, had its theme for this year as
“Access and Safety”. The idea is to create an enabling environment and opportunities for
the girl child to have equal and safe access to STEM-based subjects and careers. This is
because science, technology and innovation are the main agents of our increasingly
evolving digital society. But about 35% of students or professionals in STEM (Science
Technology Engineering and Mathematics) are women or girls.
Research has shown that there are approximately half the number of girls studying STEM
compared to boys globally. For girls and women to get involved in STEM careers, they need
safe access to the internet and digital tools. That is why at Kayron International Schools, we
give equal learning opportunities to both girls and boys in the area of IT.
Celebrating as a school, during the Thursday morning Pupils‘ Assembly, we had female
pupils in year 3 come out to demonstrate some IT skills they have learnt while in school.
Chimeremma designed an exact copy of the school’s exercise book front cover, Zuriel
created an animation of a car moving across a street with a bird flying past. We had Aviella
as the moderator of the whole event, as she gave a brief speech on the essence of the
day’s event.
