The market for jute packaging began to decline in the 1970s and 1980s, as plastic, cardboard
and other alternative packaging materials were available that were not only cheaper but also
more convenient. However, as a result of growing environmental issues regarding the non-
biodegradability and high toxicity of plastics, the demand for jute again began to rise. At that
time it was observed that many governments started banning the use of plastic due to
environmental concerns. The initiative is gaining popularity as more and more countries are
joining the campaign. The Ministry of Textiles, Government of India has mandated that at least
90% of food grains packaging material should be made of jute instead of plastic. As a result the
jute requirement of the jute industry has increased.

SWOT ANALYSIS
OPPORTUNITIES
Stiff competition- Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Thailand and China are recently posing
grave threat to India in international export market.
Low Yield Per Acre- India produces very little amount of jute per unit of land.In
fact, among the producing countries, Indian production is probably one of the
lowest. The average yield per hectare in Bangladesh is 1.62 tonnes. In India it is only
1.3 tonnes per hectare. The corresponding figure for jute production in China is
1.78 tonnes per hectare. In Taiwan it is 2 tonnes per hectare. These figures indicate
that there is ample scope for growth in Indian productivity.
Lack of infrastructure and communication facilities.
Unawareness about international requirements and market.
Inadequate information of new technology.
Interest of young people in craft industry.
Still confined to rural areas and small cities and untapped market
Lack of promotion of products.
CONCLUSION
These reusable 100% natural jute handicrafts are biodegradable, ethically sourced, eco-friendly,
long lasting. They are a sustainable alternative to plastic and most other green or eco-friendly
bags available in the market.
