i) Freshly precipitated Fe(OH)3 is shaken with little amount of dilute FeCl3 .
ii) A beam of light passed through a colloidal sol.
iii) electric current is passed through a colloidal sol.
5. Write electrode reactions and calculate the Ecell of the following cell at
298K.
Ni(s) | Ni2+ (0.001M) || Ag+ (0.1M) | Ag(s)

for 90 % completion of this reaction. (log 2 = 0.3010)
OR

For a reaction, A + 2B  2C + D
Following data was obtained experimentally:

Experimen [A] / mol L-1 [B] / mol L-1 Initial rate of reaction / mol L-1 s-
t 1

1 0.30 0.30 0.096

2 0.60 0.30 0.384

[SECTION C]
12. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow. (1×5)

Mechanism of nucleophilic addition reactions

3
A nucleophile attacks the electrophilic carbon atom of the polar carbonyl group from a
direction approximately perpendicular to the plane of sp2 hybridised orbitals of carbonyl
carbon. The hybridisation of carbon changes from sp2 to sp3 in this process, and a tetrahedral
alkoxide intermediate is produced. This intermediate captures a proton from the reaction
medium to give the electrically neutral product. The net result is addition of Nu– and H+
across the carbon oxygen double bond as shown in Figure.

i) Why aldehydes are more reactive than ketones towards nucleophilic

addition reactions?
ii) Write the major product for the following reaction:

iii) Would you expect benzaldehyde to be more reactive or less reactive in

nucleophilic addition reactions than propanal? Explain your answer.
iv) Predict the products formed when cyclohexanecarbaldehyde reacts with PhMgBr
and then H3O+
v) Write simple chemical test to distinguish between benzaldehyde and propanal.
