1) TITLE: METAL INERT GAS (MIG) WELDING

2) INTRODUCTION

MIG welding is Carbon Dioxide (CO2). It is the only one that can be used
in its pure form without the addition of an inert gas. CO2 is also the least
expensive of the common shielding gases, making it an attractive choice
when material costs are the main priority. MIG welding is an arc welding
process in which a continuous solid wire electrode is fed through a
welding gun and into the weld pool, joining the two base materials
together. A shielding gas is also sent through the welding gun and
protects the weld pool from contamination. In fact, MIG stands for metal
inert gas. The technical name for it is gas metal arc welding or (GMAW),
and the slang name for it is wire welding.

3) AIM/OBJECTIVE

1. Perform welding tasks according to workshop Standard Operating

Procedure.
2. Demonstrate awareness of social responsibility and safety
procedures in the workshop according to the workshop safety
regulations and create a secured environment in an organization
while doing practical work.
3. To provide delegates with the necessary skills, knowledge and safe
working practices to enable them to produce a range of welded
joints in mild steel using the metal inert gas shielded welding
process.
4. To discipline students using workshops should.
5. To ensure that the students that they know how to use the MIG
machine and hand tools in the right way.

4) WORK MATERIAL/EQUIPMENT

1. Hand glove
2. Welding face shield
3. Plier
4. Machine MIG
5. MIG welding gun
6. MIG welding regulators
7. MIG welding regulators
8. Carbon dioxide (CO2) tank

5) SAFETY PROCEDURE

1. Do not wear watches, rings, and bracelets as they can endanger

you while using welding where it causes injury.
2. Wear safety shoes, and gloves while using the machine.
3. Wear face shield when welding. face shield protects the eyes when
students operate MIG welding.
4. Always ensure MIG welding, hand tools and the workplace are
clean.
5. Turn off the welding machine before cleaning.

6) WORK METHOD/PROCEDURE

STEP 1
On the gas from the tank then
turned on the MIG machine and
tests the welding gun.

STEP 2
Cut two the workpiece and use
wire brush to clean it.
STEP 3
Weld a straight line on the
middle of the both workpieces.

STEP4
Then, join and weld on the
center of both workpieces.

STEP 5
Clean the final workpiece with
the wire brush.

STEP 6
Shut down the machine and
clean the workplace.

7) DISCUSSION

Gas metal arc welding (GMAW), sometimes referred to by its subtypes

metal inert gas (MIG) and metal active gas (MAG) is a welding process in
which an electric arc forms between a consumable MIG wire electrode
and the workpiece metal, which heats the workpiece metal, causing
them to fuse (melt and join). Along with the wire electrode, a shielding
gas feeds through the welding gun, which shields the process from
atmospheric contamination.
The process can be semi-automatic or automatic. A constant voltage,
direct current power source is most commonly used with GMAW, but
constant current systems, as well as alternating current, can be used.
There are four primary methods of metal transfer in GMAW, called
globular, short-circuiting, spray, and pulsed-spray, each of which has
distinct properties and corresponding advantages and limitations.

8) CONCLUSION/RECOMMENDATION

In a conclusion, MIG welding requires a lot of technique and skills. This

only can obtain if we practice welding every single day. Even though we
only had 3 hours of the session, we completed the project given by our
lecturer which is doing straight welding on a metal workpiece. As we
know MIG welding is not good in quality compared to TIG welding.
Moreover, MIG is easier and faster to complete. MIG is also one most
affordable welding procedures compared to TIG which can be expensive.
MIG is used when a thicker metal requires a longer and constant run.
The chance of defect also lessens because of its welding procedure
technique.

I hope that I can use the MIG welding skills that I learned during the
workshop in the coming future. Even though my workpiece might not be
as perfect as expected by the lecturer, I tried my best to adapt the skills
that were thought to weld my workpiece together. Finally, I enjoy doing
practical tasks in the welding workshop and I also learn a lot of new
things.
