Rise of retail investors

and the risks therein
BY ARJUN SRINIVAS, HOWINDIALIVES.COM

O n 4 April, Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman hailed Indian retail investors for investing large sums of money
in Indian stocks, thereby cushioning the markets from external shocks. This was in response to a question in Parliament
on the flight of foreign institutional investors (FIIs) against the backdrop of a war in Ukraine and a hike in interest rates
by central banks worldwide. Greater buying of Indian stocks by retail investors is partly offsetting such sales, though this has
its own vulnerabilities.
As of December 2021, the latest month with official data available, retail investors owned 9.7% of companies listed on the
National Stock Exchange (NSE), a 14-year high. In December 2019, this was 8.4% and has risen steadily since. Of the eight catego-
ries of investors, private Indian promoters and retail investors are significant gainers in ownership share. FIIs, the second-largest,
have seen the largest drop in share, along with the government. The December 2021 FII share of 19.7% was a nine-year low.
Direct investment by retail investors in Indian equities, as opposed to indirectly through mutual funds, has seen a significant
increase over the past two years. This has been spurred by people being homebound because of the covid-19 pandemic, mobile
apps that made share trading easier, and rising stock markets. The total number of active demat accounts, which one needs
to trade on stock exchanges, has more than doubled between March 2020 and March 2022, and is 89.7 million at present. This
is likely to have further increased during the initial public offering (IPO) of the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC).

Jack Ma exits
Paytm Mall;
sells 43% for
₹42 crore
Arti Singh

F
ive years after making its big-
gest bet in India’s e-com-
merce market, Jack Ma-led
Alibaba and Ant Financials
have exited Paytm E-com-
merce Pvt. Ltd, the parent entity of
Paytm Mall.
Paytm E-commerce bought back
the entire stake of Alibaba (28.34%)
and Antfin (Netherlands) Holding
(14.98%), a total of 43.32%, for ₹42
crore, according to the company’s fil-
ings.
This values the company at a mere
₹100 crore, plunging from $3 billion,
the valuation the Vijay Shekhar Shar-
ma-led company fetched in its last
fundraising that was in 2020.
Paytm Mall, inspired by Alibaba’s
T-mall in China, raised $200 million
in its first funding from Alibaba at
about $1 billion in 2017. In total, the
company raised more than $800 mil-
lion from Alibaba, Ant Financial,
SoftBank, Elevation Capital (earlier
SAIF Partners) and eBay.
Paytm E-commerce has proposed
reducing the company’s equity share
capital and securities premium
account and said it would hold an
extraordinary general meeting on 23
May.
“Despite investing significant
amounts of capital in growing its
business and expanding market
share, the company suffered opera-
tional losses. Given that the online
business space is evolving rapidly
with the onset of unique business
models, changing technologies and
new regulations, it is expected that
additional capital and efforts will be
required to be committed. The sector
continues to be highly competitive
and is marketed by the presence of
several large competitors. Finally, the
ongoing pandemic has thrown up
unique challenges for different busi-
nesses, and the company has also had
to deal with declining market eco-
nomics and demanding circumstan-
ces that impose continuous pressure
on financial metrics,” the company
said.
“Against this backdrop, the speci-
fied shareholders (Alibaba and Ant
Financial) have expressed their
desire to exit their investments in the
company,” it said.
“The company has resolved to pur-
sue the path of a capital reduction, to
extinguish equity shares and pay sur-
plus cash to the specified sharehold-
ers. Upon completion of the capital
reduction, the company will have the
right balance of the capital and share-
holders, to build a path of revival and
growth on a new trajectory,” it said.

Yellen says world

faces food crisis
because of the
war in Ukraine
Bloomberg
[email protected]

U
S treasury secretary Janet
Yellen said Russia’s invasion of
Ukraine has created a global
crisis by exacerbating food security
issues for the whole world. “The war is
having an impact beyond Ukraine and
it’s something that we’re very con-
cerned about,” she said in Warsaw on
Monday. “I’m afraid we really have a
global crisis on our hands.”
On Monday, wheat jumped by the
exchange limit to near a record high
after India’s move to restrict exports,
exposing just how tight global sup-
plies are amid the conflict in Ukraine.
The Group of Seven nations’ agricul-
tural ministers criticized the move for
making the world’s crisis worse.
Yellen is in Europe to attend the G-7
meeting of finance ministers and cen-
tral bankers in Germany later this
week. She said that officials will
release an action plan to address food
insecurity. It “will include the ways in
which you’re stepping up to provide
surge support,” she said.
“I’d like to recognize the efforts the
Polish government and other neigh-
boring governments are making to
help Ukraine develop roots for its agri-
cultural exports, for wheat, for com-
modities, that global markets desper-
ately need and are very hard to export
because of the blockades of Odesa and
other ports,” she added.
The US has pledged $40 billion in
aid for Ukraine and $5 billion for food
security “that’s making it’s way
through the Senate,” Yellen said. “We
want to make sure that the assistance
gets to where it’s needed.”

Building a portfolio is a complex exercise, and it has to be maintained, too. A person’s portfolio holds different types of assets
based on his/her financial goals, and each asset class gives different types of returns, which is why a portfolio must have an ideal
mix of financial products. One must also keep in mind the volatility risk of the asset class, liquidity, lock-in rules and taxation.
Here's a look at how four commonly used asset types—equity, cash, gold and fixed income—have done in different periods.
