APPLICATION GUIDE
WATER TREATMENT TECHNOLOGIES
The following pages include brief descriptions of the water treatment technologies and products offered
by Water Maze. The technology descriptions are written in simple terms so that the reader can discern the
capabilities and limitations of each technology. We believe that a well-informed customer will ultimately
result in a satisfied customer. Therefore, it is import that we offer our customers a basic understanding of each
technology, as well as the products that we offer.

Incorrect selection of products and/or water treatment technologies can be a costly mistake. Equipment selection
should involve a qualified application sales engineer that can assist and guide the buyer through the process.

The approach would normally involve the following minimal qualifying questions:
1. What is the source of the influent water and how is the water being generated?
2. How much water volume (hourly and daily) will need to be processed?
3. What are the constituents in the water that will need to be removed? (Oils, Solids, Metals, etc.)
4. What are the characteristics of the constituents in the water?
(Free-floating oils, emulsified oils, settleable solids, suspended solids, etc.)
5. What is the intended use of the treated water? (Recycle, discharge to sewer, etc.)

Typically, multiple products and/or multiple water treatment technologies become part of the total solution.
Only Water Maze offers such a complete range of products and technologies. Combined with our extensive network
of local supporting dealers, Water Maze is your best partner for wash water and industrial water treatment systems.

PRE-TREATMENT
PRE-TREATMENT IS A VITAL PART OF
ALL WATER TREATMENT SYSTEMS
All water treatment systems should include “adequate”
pre-treatment. The definition of “adequate” may vary
depending on the site specific application conditions and
the physical and chemical properties of the influent water.

The primary objective of pre-treatment is to prepare the

water for additional downstream treatment. For some
applications, simply adjusting the pH of the water will
effectively change the physical characteristics of the water
and perhaps will provide easier downstream treatment.
A well designed pit system that removes settleable heavy
solids will reduce the burden the downstream equipment
from being overwhelmed. If changing or adding the pit
system is not feasible, perhaps adding an above-ground
cone-bottomed clarifier tank is an option. For some
applications, where there is an abundance of free-floating
oils in the water, pre-treatment to remove excessive
amounts of free-floating oils prior to addressing the
emulsified oils may be required.

The following pages contain some of the pre-treatment

technologies and products offered by Water Maze.

PRE-TREATMENT

TECHNOLOGY pH CONTROL
Maintaining proper pH in the water is crucial to a water treatment system’s effectiveness. A balanced pH promotes: solids to settle out quicker; emulsified
oils to become more buoyant; and some metals to precipitate. Extreme pH levels will negatively impact the performance of a water treatment system.
Automatic adjustment, rather than manually adjusting the pH of the water is highly recommended. Water Maze offers a variety of automatic pH control
systems. Some are incorporated into the base product, some are factory installed options, others are stand alone systems (as shown below).

PRODUCT pH Permissive System

The PH-3020 system incorporates: a digital (dual) pH controller that monitors and adjusts both
base and acid pH ranges; a circulation pump; and chemical peristaltic pumps. Once the pH set
points (high or low) is satisfied, the permissive interlock system of the controller will provide an
output signal for the purpose of downstream release and/or post processing of the water. (For
Holding Tank | Auto Fill PH-3020 additional details, refer to the pH Permissive product sheet)

TECHNOLOGY FIBERGLASS PIT SYSTEMS

Reinforced, pre-fabricated fiberglass pits are significantly easier and less expensive to ship and install than shipping or constructing on site pits made
of concrete. The fiberglass is chemically resistant and the inner surfaces are impervious, which inhibits the growth of bacteria. When they are properly
installed (e.g., immersed in concrete), they effectively can provide double containment in case of ground movement.

Baffles provide double containment. We offer three sizes of pits. The
In-ground Separator (IGS) is uniquely designed with two sets
of standing weirs that force solids to the bottom of the pit.

TECHNOLOGY ABOVE-GROUND CONE-BOTTOM TANKS
Above-ground cone-bottom tanks can enhance existing pit systems that may be too small, or that do not provide adequate pre-treatment. They can also be
an economical alternative to expensive pit system reconstruction costs. Cone-bottom tanks can also provide lower clean out maintenance, as compared to
some in-ground pit systems.

PRODUCT Above-ground Cone-bottom Tanks

Water Maze CLT-600 and CLT-300 models can be applied as
pre-treatment, post treatment, or as a stand alone treatment
system. These models utilize cross-linked polyethylene
cone-bottom tanks with steep slopes (up to 55 degrees) for
maximum solids separation. Each tank has a full open top with
removable lid and includes heavy duty metal stand with cradle.
These base models are also incorporated into other clarifier
models within this products catalog with features and benefits
CLT-600 CLT-300 150 gal Tank with Stand 310 gal Tank with Stand to match your application requirements.

TECHNOLOGY IN-GROUND WASH PADS & ABOVE-GROUND WASH RACKS

The first purpose of a wash pad or wash rack is to contain wash water and the constituents in the water. The length and width dimensions of the largest
item being cleaned will be a determining factor for the overall size of the wash pad. The second purpose is to retain solids that are heavy enough to settle.
The volume of the settled solids over a certain time period and the end-user’s commitment to clean out the accumulated solids is a critical consideration.
When properly designed, a pit system can cause suspended solids to settle. The third purpose is to provide adequate dwell/quiet time for overall separation
of solids and oils.
Notes: 1. As solids accumulate in the pit system, water will be displaced. If the solids are not
routinely cleaned out, the dwell time will be reduced.
2. Pit systems with excessively large water volumes can promote anaerobic microbial
activity, which will create a malodorous (smelly) working environment.

FREE-FLOATING OILS/
EMUSLIFIED OILS/SOLUBLE OILS
Oil/water separators are generally capable of separating
free-floating oils, rather than chemically emulsified oils, or soluble
oils from water. Many unaware buyers will request an oil/water
separator, without knowing the physical characteristics of the oils
as they exist in the water. This can result in a costly mistake.

OIL/WATER SEPARATION

TECHNOLOGY IN-GROUND OIL/WATER SEPARATORS

In-ground oil/water separators can be an effective method of trapping free floating oils. However, in-ground collection of oils will also require a method
to remove the trapped oils. Oil extraction can be accomplished using a vacuum system or an above grade skimmer system (as shown below).
Note: In-ground oil/water separators with excessively large water volumes can promote anaerobic
microbial activity, which will create a malodorous (smelly) working environment.

PRODUCT In-ground Oil/Water Separator

The Water Maze In-ground Separator (IGS) unit not only provides
excellent solids separation, but when combined with our uniquely
designed “Maze” of oil coalescing grids, it also enhances the
separation of oils from water.

TECHNOLOGY ABOVE-GROUND CLARIFIER/OIL/WATER SEPARATORS
There are various types and designs of clarifier / oil / water separators in the market. In general, most above-ground systems are easier to manage and
maintain than below ground systems. Each product may incorporate various features and benefits

PRODUCT Clarifier/Oil/Water Separators

Water Maze offers a wide range of above-ground clarifiers that
incorporate skimming of free-floating oils at flow rates at up
to 30 GPM (6.8 cubic meters/hour). As with the CLT-300 and
CLT-600 cone-bottom tanks shown on page 13, our clarifier
CL-30A
models CL-30A and CL-600D utilize cross-linked polyethylene
cone-bottom tanks with a steep slope (up to 55 degrees) for
maximum solids separation. Each model includes a full open
top with removable lid and a heavy duty metal stand with
cradle. The CL-30A and CL-600D models also incorporate a
separator top cone that effectively divides the one piece tank
into top and bottom chambers. As influent water is pumped
into the clarifier, it flows downward into the belly of the lower
chamber where the flow of water (a mixture of solids, oils, and
water) must reverse and then travel upward through coalescing
cones (two cones on the CL-30 and ten cones on the CL-600D).
The upward reversal of the flow causes the heavier solids to
CL-600D settle to the bottom of the cone. As the oil and water mixture
flows upward, it passes by inverted coalescing cones (which
attracts small oil droplets) and into the top chamber of the
clarifier tank. Free-floating oils are then skimmed (see skimmer
options) and are then drained to an oil-decanter container
positioned on the ground next to the clarifier. The treated water,
(with free-oils and heavy solids removed) is forced downward
(using hydraulic head pressure) into a uniquely designed piping
system where it is discharged from the clarifier.

MECHANICAL
FILTRATION
MECHANICAL FILTRATION REMOVES
PARTICULATE MATTER FROM WATER
Filtration refers to the removal of solids from water. Solids in
water are normally classified and measured as either suspended
(Total Suspended Solids – TSS), or as dissolved (Total Dissolved
Solids – TDS). Generally, the definition of a dissolved solid is a
particle that is less than 2 micron.

Although some filtration technologies will remove dissolved

solids from water, like reverse osmosis, Water Maze does not
supply these types of filtration systems at this time. Rather,
Water Maze offers products with filtration capabilities that range
from 5 to 20 micron.

Factors that should be considered when selecting a filtration

system are: 1) the total spectrum (range) of particle sizes;
2) the total amount of particles contained in the water
(e.g., percentage of total solids); 3) the process flow rate
requirements; 4) the amount of maintenance required by the
filtration system.

When selecting a mechanical filtration system, it is important to

confirm the following: What are the water quality requirements
that pertain to the intended use of the water? Does the selected
filter or system remove enough of the particles to achieve the
water quality requirements?

PRODUCT IPF2-20D Indexing Polishing Filter

The IPF solids dewatering unit utilizes inexpensive fabric
media to filter out solid particles. Fabric paper, which is
supplied in 5, 20, and 50 micron sizes, is automatically
indexed onto a recessed conveyor belt made of high tensile,
non-metallic material. As water and solid particles drain
through the fabric paper, solids are retained by the fabric
paper. As the fabric paper blinds over, the water level will
rise, a float will actuate a drive motor and gear system, the
conveyer belt will index forward allowing the spent paper to
fall into a collection container and new paper to index onto the
conveyor belt. The IPF can be applied for pre-treatment, post
treatment, or as a stand alone treatment system.

COAGULATION/
FLOCCULATION
CHEMICAL TREATMENT SYSTEMS CAN
REMOVE SUSPENDED SOLIDS, EMULSIFIED
OILS, AND HEAVY METALS
Coagulation/flocculation water treatment technology is typically
applied to remove suspended particles and/or emulsified oils
from water.

Particles are suspended due to natural ionic charges (e.g., common

charges) that are present in the water. In the case of emulsified oils,
the use of cleaning agents (i.e., degreasing agents, detergents,
surfactants, etc.) create similar ionic charges around oil droplets.
In either case, these common charges (negative to negative, or
positive to positive) create repelling forces in water that suspends
the matter.

COAGULATION
The purpose of coagulation is to neutralize the repelling charges
and to allow the matter to gather (agglomerate). For most wash
water and industrial wastewater applications, coagulation can
be accomplished by mixing a chemical coagulant (a cationic
positive charged chemical) into the water, or by applying
Electro-coagulation (an electrolytic process using an electrolytic
sacrificial cell and DC current) to the water. ADVANTAGES
FLOCCULATION Coagulation
The purpose of flocculation is to create additional adhesion When combined with
