1. I will call the community where all type of communities exists as Strengthened Unified
Community. From its name itself, a community where all type of communities are present is
something that is very absolute and ideal. It gives the citizens the opportunity to live the life
they wanted to and it literally contributes to the betterment of quality of life. I named it as
Strengthened Unified Community because since this community is all in one, the prospect or the
chance of achieving unity, change and empowerment would be really high.

2. In the illustration, you can depict all the types of communities. For Intentional Community,
you can see ladies washing clothes together shows individual sharing the same interests. For
Geographic Community, it is visible in illustration how each other respect personal spaces and it
has also been surrounded by different landforms and water forms. Meanwhile in Interest
Community, I chose not to showcase social movements because it would be irrelevant for the
illustration scenario, but if we take a deeper look at it, we can see the respect and equality of
rights showing man and a woman working together in a certain chore and besides the whole
illustration shows an image of peace and harmony and it greatly defines Interest of Community
or Solidarity and lastly for Identity Community, you can see in the image how great the
community as a whole is from the uniqueness of each people to the way they live their lives and
the fact that they have the freedom to become who really they are. I am pretty sure that we are
all aiming for this but for me as long as respect is present in a community, everything would be
great.

I am Franz Danielle B. Fabie, a bonafide student of Divine Word College of Bangued, under the strand of
Humanities and Social Sciences. We are pleased to inform you that we are conducting an activity with the
supervision of Mr. Lechner G Sanchez on the context of societal or community security issues that
requires to be held outside the campus.

This letter is a request to your respected office to grant our project team the permission to undertake a
community visit and assessment as a project preliminary activity. This study would not only contribute in
our personal academic growth but it would also enable us to discover possible problems and identify
current situations in communities and assess what kind of help they need. This is a requirement for us that
needs to be accomplished rightfully and with all due respect, if you accept our request, it will be a good
action to take part for our project.

At the end of this activity, it is expected that we will enable to understand communities more and rest
assured that the needed actions and response would be conducted immediately. Thus, the research on the
societal or community security issues will be answered through the completed community visit and

Module 3.5

What I Know

1. What was the situation then?

This just happened last year when Typhoon Ulysses devastated Cagayan Province and the
destruction it has left is really unimaginable. Thousands of people are crying for help in the
middle of dark night and almost the whole Cagayan province was submerged in a flood.

2. Why were you gathered together?

We can no longer take the pain of hearing cries of help in social media and in news that is why
we, the Central Board of Students wrote a letter to the principal of our school, Mrs. Glenda T.
Mangaser asking for a consent and permission to conduct a donation drive for the Typhoon
Ulysses victims and fortunately, she together with the president of our school both agreed with
our idea.

3, What actions did you take?

Being the President of the Central of Board of Students, I spent a week in the school together
with my fellow officers collecting donations and financial help from the students, teachers and
parents. I became the witness on how each people willingly donated and take part for our
donation drive and we would be forever grateful for that. We brought the collected donations in
DZPA Media Team because they are the one who have direct contact with the Diocese of
Cagayan. It would never be possible without the initiative and help of different people. The
actions we've made were also featured in the morning news of DZPA.

4. Why did you do those actions?

Like what I said we can no longer take to see them suffer and continuously cries for help
therefore we did our very best to help them in ways that we know and besides this is the main
reason why we are elected as student leader to become model for others and to become agent for
change. It is our humanitarian obligation in the first place.

5. How did you implement your actions?

We no longer conducted meetings or something, we just wanted to send help to those who are in
need as soon as possible. As the President, I never required my co officers to do this or to do
that. All of the things that we have accomplished are because of our initiative or whole
heartedness to help.

6. What happened?

Days passed by, we are glad to receive message of thanks and gratitude from the Diocese of
Cagayan informing us that they finally received the help and donations that we have given and it
would really be a great help for them. We take this as a great success of our organization.

7. What did you learn?

I really learned a lot of things in that scenario especially when they were interviewing our team
in radio station asking what pushes us to do such thing. It is our responsibilities as humans to
help our fellows who are in need. During the strike of typhoon Pepeng and Lawin here in our
province, people of Cagayan also never fails to help us rise again. What I am trying to say is,
helping is an act that gives you unique kind of happiness , we must never hesitate to give it to
someone as long as we are capable to because the purpose of human life is to serve and to show
compassion and will to help others.

8. What will you recommend for future action?

Natural disasters are inevitable. I recommend nothing but to strengthen the essence of resiliency
of us Filipinos. We just have to be mindful and be alert when it comes. Destructions would
always and always be there therefore we really need each other for us to rise again. If someone
cries for help, lend them because someday we'll definitely need them too.

What I Can Do

Community Engagement

 When we say Community Engagement, we speak of involvement and participation in an

organization for the welfare of the community. To emphasize it, here is a real life
application of this. We are in the middle of pandemic; actually cases are again getting
higher each day. The destruction it has brought to our country was really tremendous. I
know that all of us carry the common goal of eradicating the virus and suppressed it as
soon as we can. There enters the concept of Community Engagement. The front liners,
the government and each single citizen have to engage themselves, they have to involve
themselves in community movement in order to address the goal of eradicating the virus.
The frontliners have to fulfill the work and passion they are committed to. The
government should be aware of its responsibilities and the actions needed to be taken and
of course we citizens have to do our part of following the rules, ordinances and protocols
that are being implemented. We have our own job and responsibilities. We have our own
engagement in our community. If we only knew how to constantly follow and do our part
as individuals, maybe our country was already CoVid free.

Citizenship

 Citizenship is not all about being a Filipino or being an American. Citizenship means
living up to the ideals and values that makes a community great, it denotes membership
of a citizen in a political society. Gordon B. Hinckley once quoted, "Every good citizen
adds to the strength of a nation and yes it is undeniably true. One of our obligation and
responsibility as human is to become a good and responsible citizen but how? You just
have to remember two words respect and discipline. Being a good citizen is all about
having respect and discipline, respect in our flag, in our country, in other people, in the
law and of course in state of nation and secondly, discipline with the way we think, the
way we talk and the way we act. By simply following the rules and laws, exercising our
right to vote and showing respect and patriotism to for the people who suffered their lives
for the sake of our country, we can already be considered as a good citizen. In our
country, the strength and essence of our citizenship is very firm and I hope it would not
change as the new generation begins to rise.
Solidarity
 Solidarity is defined as an awareness of shared interests, objectives, standards, and
sympathies creating a psychological sense of unity of groups or classes. It refers to the
ties in a society that bind people together as one. We are all aware of the fact that
solidarity is very dominant in our community. This concept is already tied in Filipino
mentality. Global deaths, inequality and injustice, Covid-19 pandemic and the virus itself,
unemployment, financial, abuse of human rights, livelihood instability and etc. ,these are
just some of the reasons why rallies, political movements and rights advocates continue
to linger on. It just shows the fact that Filipinos are not blind and they are courageous
enough to speak for themselves. One of the famous political movements that has occurred
in our history is the people power way 1986, it has unified a lot of people to plead former
President Ferdinand Marcos to go down of his position like what Starhawk said,
"Solidarity is based on the principle that we are willing to put ourselves at risk to protect
each other.

What I Know?

Personally, I am not satisfied in the economic progression of our community. The inflation rate
is continuously increasing while job and business opportunities are decreasing. It became more
tremendous as the pandemic enters. Our economy has reached its lowest point and it is a serious
issue that must be addressed. It is terrifying and we could not deny the fact that it would take
time for us to fully recover.

What I Can Do

Case Study on the Improper Disposal of Plastics in Province of Abra

Community Problem

Over a few decades, humans have managed to dump tons upon tons of garbage into the river. Of
the most devastating elements of this pollution is that plastics takes thousands of years to decay.
As a result, fish and wildlife are becoming intoxicated. Consequently the toxins from the plastics
have entered the food chain, threatening human health. In the most polluted places in the river,
the mass of plastic exceeds the amount of plankton six times over. This is a large piece of
evidence that leaves the problem of polluted rivers undeniable. It is upsetting that more of
cleanup effort is not taking place.

It aims to regulate the use of plastic bags to prevent potential serious ecological imbalance
particularly in the creeks, rivers, and other waterways.

Community Project

The Environment and Natural Resources Office (ENRO) is tasked to monitor the enforcement of
the ordinance by submitting periodic reports. The implementing body is composed of the
Provincial Planning and Development Office (PPDO), Department of Education (DepEd),
Department of Health (DOH), and Local Government Unit’s Municipal Planning and
Development Council (MPDC).

Section 11 of the ordinance states the prohibited acts wherein establishments and/or individuals
are prohibited from selling and providing plastic bags to customers as secondary packaging
materials on wet goods, selling and providing plastic bags to customers as packaging material on
dry goods, selling and providing styrofoam as containers and disposing of plastic wastes.

Section 12 states the penalties of all establishments violating the ordinance. First offenders will
be fined P1,000.00. Second-time offenders will be fined P2,000.00. Third-time offenders will be
fined P5,000.00 and or imprisonment of more than six months upon the discretion of the court
and in the case of business establishments, cancellation of their license to operate for a period of
one year.

Change Strategies

It is discipline and responsibility that matters. Plastic waste management is already a problem of
years and let us not wonder why because we cannot also question the convenience of plastic. But
there are strategies that would definitely help the citizen to adopt in this community project that
has been implented. Let us try to embrace the change by using recycled bags, metal straws and
by disposing our waste, plastic or non-plastic on its proper places but just like what I said we are
already mature enough to assess what is right from wrong . It just a matter of responsibility,
discipline and respect to our mother nature.

Summative Assessment

1. I believe poverty persist despite development interventions because of the lack of courage of
those who are in the poverty line to take risk in entering job or any opportunities. If they are
given financial help, more likely they would just provide it for their pleasure instead of using it
to start business or any source of income therefore financial knowledge among these people is
also one of the problem. Another is, in my opinion, the actions that are being implemented by the
government and authorities are not enough to support or raise these people out from poverty and
lastly, definitely it is all about lack of opportunities, our world is becoming more modern each
single day therefore it also demands globally competitive individual, but how would they accept
these less fortunate people if they do not possess the qualifications that our world today require
but besides all of these, people who are in poverty really needs our helps. It is our humanitarian
obligation to lend them hand and let us give them the chance to rise from the darkness.

2. For us to achieve an effective community development, of course we would need a clean and
honest government that would lead us. How can you expect one community to grow or to move
forward if it was being led by people who are not capable o f addressing change . How can we
move forward if we are being led by corrupt and dark government isn't? Yes , therefore it is the
main and foremost requirement. Secondly, to address development it needs responsible and
participative citizens, actually change begins within ourselves. If all of us have the will and
common goal of achieving something, then we could definitely make it. If people works hard for
the common good, nothing is impossible and lastly of course Resiliency, we have to be resilient.
We need resiliency for us to be still able to manage and conquer all the challenges that are
coming in our community. Let us never let ourselves to go back to zero if the world is trying us ,
we have to be resilient all the time because Coretta Scott King once quoted, The greatness of
a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members.

3. It is a must for us to take community action because it definitely helps in achieving a number
of objectives such as building community and social capacity that helps the community to share
knowledge, skills and ideas. Secondly, community resilience, like what I said it helps the
community to support itself. Third, to focus on early access to services or support, engagement
in design, cross-sector collaboration and partnerships and lastly, in maintaining and creating
wealth, for example helping people into employment or developing community enterprises. We
must all bear in our minds that community action is the foundation and it plays a vital role in the
development of our community. Let us do our parts respectively for us to be able to see that
change that we envision.
