MID-TERM EXAMINATION

DATE: March 30, 2022

TIME: 12:00 – 13:20
VENUE: Zoom

PLEDGE OF HONOR
On my honor as a student of Hong Kong University of Science and
Technology, I have neither received aid from others nor given aid to
others while taking this exam. All of the answers represent my own work.

Total points: 20 pts + 4pts. Bonus

1. (12 pts) Short-answering questions

(i) (a) What are Fraunhofer F-, D-, and C-line (589.2 nm, 486.1 nm and 656.3
nm) representing? (b) Calculate the frequencies of light at Fraunhofer F-,
D-, and C-line, respectively. (b) What are these lines’ wavelengths and
frequencies in water?
(ii) (a) Give a brief discussion on the two most important experiments that
proved light as wave and as particle (photon), respectively. (b) Explain the
wave particle duality of light and briefly prove it.
(iii) A retroreflector is a device or surface that reflects radiation back to its
source with minimum scattering. It has broad applications. (a) Sketch its
structure and explain how it works. (b) How was it used to measure the
distance between earth and moon?
(iv) A laser beam having a diameter D in air strikes a piece of glass (ng) at an
angle θi. What is the diameter of the beam in the glass?
(v) (a)For internal reflection, calculate the critical angle for an interface
between two media of refractive indices, n1 and n2, respectively. (b)
Explain why total internal reflection occurs when incident angle is greater
than critical angle. (c) Give two examples of important applications of
total internal reflection.
(vi) (a) Explain how a magnifier works and calculate its magnification when
the magnified image is located at infinite. (b) It is important to form the
𝑓𝑓
magnified image at infinite? (c) Prove the magnification of telescope is 𝑜𝑜.
𝑓𝑓𝑒𝑒
(d) In Lab 3, you built an erect telescope. Sketch its schematic diagram
and explain how it works.

2. (6 pts.) Lens design

i. Design an ideal thin singlet lens of focal length 60 mm at Fraunhofer D-
line.
ii. Design a “real” lens of the same focal length at Fraunhofer D-line and 8
mm thickness. Find the locations of its principal planes.
iii. Design an achromatic lens of the same focal length.
iv. Calculate the focal lengths of your three lenses at Fraunhofer F-, D- and C-
line, respectively.
(Note: choose any of glasses with refractive indices shown in the figure
below.)
3. (6 pts.) Optical imaging system:
i. (a) How does a compound microscope produce the magnified image of
small object? (b) Sketch a typical compound microscope system. (c) The
objective of a microscope has a focal length of 0.5 cm and forms the
intermediate image 16 cm from its second focal point. What is the overall
magnification of the microscope when an eyepiece rated at X10 is used?
ii. (a) What is the depth of field (DOF) of an optical imaging system? (b) For
a given object distance, what determines the DOF of an imaging system
and why?
(a) Describe ABCD matrix of an optical imaging system. (b) A concave-
planar glass (n = 1.50) lens in air has a radius of 10.0 cm and a thickness
of 1.00 cm. (i) Determine the system matrix and check that its determinant
is 1. (ii) At what positive angle (in radians measured above the axis)
should a ray strike the lens at a height of 2.0 cm, if it is to emerge from the
lens at the same height but parallel to the optical axis?
