MODULE 1: The Nature,Properties, and Aspects of Language

LESSON 2: Aspects and Properties of Language

Name: Marc Jalen Relador

Program/Year/Section: BAEL AE21

Activity: The discussion in the previous lesson allowed you to define language and identify its nature and
characteristics. Knowing all those concepts, complete the statements below.

I thought language and society doesn’t have connection with each other when studying
language. Also, I thought that language does not differ or vary even though there are individuals or
particular groups that have their own type of language. Turns out it is not necessarily that an individual
should not follow the prescriptiveness when using language in a particular social context. Furthermore,
descriptiveness in language is a more proper approach when using a particular type of language.
Likewise, language variation is present when a certain language speaker is talking in a different place or
community where their language is different from other societal groups.

Application: Identify what property of languages is described in each item.

2. The sounds used in language are meaningfully distinct.

Answer: Discreteness

3. It is an aspect of language, which is linked to the fact that the potential number of utterances in any
human language is infinite.

culture with other speakers and not from parental genes.

environment.

meaningless elements; i.e., a limited inventory of sounds or phonemes.

Answer: Duality

8. The forms of human language demonstrate this property because they do not, in any way, fit the
objects they denote.

Answer: Arbitrariness

9. Also called “creativity or open-endedness” It is an aspect of language, which is linked to the fact that
the potential number of utterances in any human language is infinite.

things that are present.

Answer: Displacement
