ADAS (Advance Driver Assistance System)

This document discusses various advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) that help drivers and improve safety. It describes technologies like anti-lock braking systems, adaptive cruise control, blind spot detection, lane departure warning, pedestrian detection and more. For each system, it provides a brief explanation of what it is and how it works. The conclusion states that while ADAS improves safety, drivers need to understand how the systems function and manufacturers must anticipate real-world situations.

ABSTRACT

 New cars can be equipped with many advanced safety solutions. Airbags, seatbelts and all of
the essential passive safety parts are standard equipment. Now cars are often equipped with
new advanced active safety systems that can prevent accidents. The functions of the
Advanced Driver Assistance Systems are still growing. A review of the most popular available
technologies used in ADAS and descriptions of their application areas are discussed in this
ppt.
ADAS

 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, commonly called ADAS, are the systems to help the

driver in the driving process. When designed with a safe and appropriate Human-Machine

Interface, they should increase the safety of car and more generally the road safety. Advanced

driver assistance systems (ADAS) are technologies that provide a driver with needed

information, automate difficult and repetitive tasks, and lead to the overall increase in safety

of the car for. Some of these technologies have proven to an improved driving experience and

better overall road safety

Different Driver Assistance Systems

 Anti lock Braking System(ABS)  Hill Descent Control

 Adaptive Cruse Control  Lane Departure Warning
 Blind Spot Detection  Pedestrian Detection
 Driver Drowsiness Detection  Traffic Signal Recognition
 Electronic Stability Control
 Emergency Braking System(EBS)
Anti lock Braking System(ABS)

 An anti-lock braking system (ABS) is a safety anti-skid braking

system.

 ABS operates by preventing the wheels from locking up during

braking, thereby maintaining tractive contact with the road surface
and allowing the driver to maintain more control over the vehicle.

 If a fault develops in any part of the ABS, a warning light will usually
be illuminated on the vehicle instrument panel, and the ABS will be
disabled until the fault is rectified.
Adaptive Cruse Control

 Adaptive cruise control (ACC) is an available cruise control advanced

driver assistance system for road vehicles that automatically adjusts the
vehicle speed to maintain a safe distance from vehicles ahead.

 Control is based on sensor information from on-board sensors. Such

systems may use a radar or laser sensor or a camera setup allowing the
vehicle to brake when it detects the car is approaching another vehicle
ahead, then accelerate when traffic allows it to
Blind Spot Detection

 The blind spot monitor or blind-spot monitoring is a vehicle-

based sensor device that detects other vehicles located to the driver’s side
and rear. Warnings can be visual, audible, vibrating, or tactile.

 Blind spot monitors may do more than monitor the sides and rear of the
vehicle. They may also include "Rear Cross-Traffic Alert", "which alerts
drivers backing out of a parking space when traffic is approaching from the
sides.
Driver Drowsiness Detection

 Driver drowsiness detection is a car safety technology which helps

prevent accidents caused by the driver getting drowsy. Various
studies have suggested that around 20% of all road accidents are
fatigue-related, up to 50% on certain roads.
Electronic Stability Control

 Electronic stability control (ESC), also referred to as electronic stability

program (ESP) or dynamic stability control (DSC), is a computerized
technology that improves a vehicle's stability by detecting and reducing
loss of traction (skidding).)

 When ESC detects loss of steering control, it automatically applies the

brakes to help steer the vehicle where the driver intends to go.

 Some ESC systems also reduce engine power until control is regained.
Emergency Braking System(EBS)

 Brake assist (BA or BAS) or emergency brake assist (EBA) is a term

for an automobile braking technology that increases braking pressure
in an emergency.

 By interpreting the speed and force with which the brake pedal is
pushed, the system detects if the driver is trying to execute an
emergency stop, and if the brake pedal is not fully applied, the system
overrides and fully applies the brakes until the anti-lock braking
system (ABS) takes over to stop the wheels locking up.
Hill Descent Control

 When on, the vehicle will descend using the anti-lock braking
system (ABS) to control each wheel's speed.

 If the vehicle accelerates without driver input, the system will

automatically apply the brakes to slow down to the desired vehicle speed.

 Cruise control buttons can adjust the speed to a comfortable level.

Applying pressure to the accelerator or brake pedal will override the HDC
system when the driver requires.
Lane Departure Warning

 In road-transport terminology, a lane departure warning

system (LDWS) is a mechanism designed to warn the driver when
the vehicle begins to move out of its lane (unless a turn signal is on in
that direction) on freeways and arterial roads.

 These systems are designed to minimize accidents by addressing the

main causes of collisions: driver error, distractions and drowsiness.
Pedestrian Detection

 Pedestrian accidents are the second source of traffic injuries and

fatalities in the European Union. In this sense, advanced driver
assistance systems (ADAS), and specifically pedestrian protection
systems (PPS), have become an important field of research to improve
traffic safety.

 Using sensors and cameras ,it detects the pedestrian and give signal to
the electronic control system which do the further operations
,ie..braking, cruise control etc
Traffic Signal Recognition

 Traffic-sign recognition (TSR) is a technology by which a vehicle is

able to recognize the traffic signs put on.

 The technology is being developed by a variety of automotive suppliers.

It uses image processing techniques to detect the traffic signs. The
detection methods can be generally divided into color based, shape
based and learning based methods. the road e.g. "speed limit" or
"children" or "turn ahead".
CONCLUSION

 The different futures of ADAS are described above, are slowly becoming standard
equipment and are now produced for more expensive vehicles or luxury vehicles.
Although the use of the ADAS greatly increases road safety, it is important for drivers to
learn how it works and is used. In time users will trust these systems. It is more important
that ADAS manufacturers anticipate how these systems are used in a number of
situations on the road.
