Discussion Assignment – Unit 7 PSYCH

Explain how gender conditioning and social norms you experienced during your formative
years affected your health-related beliefs and behaviors both then and now?

Gender roles refer to the behaviors that male and females display in both the personal and
diverse societies. Gender roles are the social beliefs that apply to a person based on their gender
classification whether male or female. Typically, a person's gender is established by the
appearance of their genital at birth (Tong, 2012).
Growing up in my culture, we were taught that women are supposed to be caregivers. They are
to cook, clean, and look after their family. While the males are the breadwinners in the home,
they are expected to work and provide for their family. Some other belief that was taught are that
men should be strong they are always protect and respect ladies especially their mothers.
Females are to be modest they should not be loud and boisterous or even be seen sitting at the
roadside. Also, it is shameful and unhealthy for women to be seen smoking and drinking. For a
man we are taught that it is also unhealthy but if a man smokes the stigma attached is less severe.
Compare this with the ideas in the readings and discuss whether your health beliefs and
behaviors tend toward the gender norms or whether your health beliefs and behaviors tend
to be one of the many exceptions.

Health beliefs is said to predict behaviors such as smoking, nutrition, workout, and safer sex
(Ogden, 2019). Today I stand firm with most of these beliefs and live my life guided by such. I
think that most of my health behavior derives from gender norms. For example, I do not drink
alcohol nor smoke because I believe it is dangerous to my health and because it is a form of
disgrace in my culture.
In conclusion gender role and gender conditioning differs among every country and culture. It
has a strong impact on our perceptions and, influences our health beliefs and the way we behave.
My question is do you believe gender is a choice or is it rightfully determined at birth based on a
person gentialia?
