Question # 1:: Production Engineering 1

The document contains 4 questions about forging operations for a production engineering assignment. Question 1 asks to describe four forging operations and their advantages/limitations with sketches. Question 2 asks to plot force vs reduction curves for open die forging of copper under different friction conditions. Question 3 asks to calculate the required press capacity for plane strain forging of a rectangular workpiece with given dimensions and material properties undergoing 20% height reduction. Question 4 asks about common defects in impression die forging and how to eliminate/reduce them.

PRODUCTION ENGINEERING

1st Year Marine

ASSIGNMENT 2: Forging
Due Date: 18Th October 2007
All questions are of equal marks. Maximum Mark (10)

Question # 1 :
Describe four dierent forging operations stating their advantages and or limi-
tations. (Illustrative sketches are necessary for the operations description.

Question # 2 :
Plot the force vs. reduction in height curve in open die forging of a cylindrical,
annealed copper specimen 1.5 in. high and 1 in. in diameter up to a reduction
of 30% for the cases of

• no friction

• µ = 0.2

• sticking friction

(All plots should be on the same graph)

Question # 3 :
A rectangular workpiece has the following original dimensions 2a= 120 mm, h=
30 mm and width = 20 mm. The metal ow stress is expressed by σ = 4000.3 .
It is beign forged in plane strain were, µ = 0.2 and the reduction in height is
20%. Calculate the required press capacity to o the work.

Question # 4 :
What are the main forging defects observed in impression die forging and state
how to eliminate/ reduce them.
