Estimating and Using Appropriate Units
Lesson for Measuring Volume.

2
What I Need to Know
At the end of the Lesson 2. you are expected to estimates and uses appropriate units of
measure
for volume.

What’s In
In Lesson 1, you have learned how to find the volume of a given cube and a rectangular prism
using cu.cm and cu.m. This time, using the appropriate units, you can measure and estimate the
volume.

Estimate the appropriate unit of volume to measure each of the following:

1. water in a swimming pool 4. Juice in a tetra pack

2. water in a pail 5. Air in a classroom
3. soil in the plant box

What’s New
Study the figure below. (Drawing is not scale)

1cm 1dm
1m

1cm 1 cm 1 dm 1 dm 1m 1m

1 cubic centimeter 1 cubic decimeter 1 cubic metre

3 3 3 3 3 3
1cm = 1000 mm 1 dm = 1000 cm 1m = 1000 dm
1m 3 = 1 000 000 cm3
6
Study the following and look for the pattern:

2 dm3 = 2 000 cm3 2 000 cm3 = 2 dm3

3 dm3 = 3 000 cm3 3 000cm3 = 3 dm3

3
4.5 dm = 4 500 cm3 4 500 cm3 = 4.5 dm3

What Is It

Would you like to convert one cubic unit to another? We can use the appropriate conversion
factor. Study the following:

Look at the examples below.

3 3
Example 1. 2 dm = ___cm
3 3 3 3 3
Since 1 dm = 1000 cm , then 2 dm = 2 x 1000 cm = 2000 cm
3 3
2. 4.5m = ___ cm
3 3
Since 1 m = 1 000 000 cm, then
3 cm 3
4.5 m = 4.5 x 1 3000 000 cm = 4 500 000

3. 3 500 cm3 = ___ dm 3

Since 1 000 cm3 = 1 dm3 , then

3 500 cm3 = ( 3 500 ÷ 1 000 ) × 1 dm3 = 3.5 × 1 dm3 = 3.5 dm 3

7
What’s More
Estimate the volume of each of the rectangular prism with the given measurements.

1. 5.2 cm x 3.2 cm x 4.1 cm

2. 6.1 m x 9.8 m x 2.4 m

3. 7.4 mm x 19.1 mm x 10.9 mm

What I Have Learned

Compare. Write =, ˃, or < to replace each .

1. 485 dm3 0.485 m3
