General
Water meters called for in this Specifications are required to measure the potable water flow
to consumers. Their design, duties, constraints and other requirements are outlined in the
following clauses of these Specifications.
Operating Conditions
The water to be measured is potable cold water. The meters offered must fulfil the following
operating conditions:
(a) Water temperature – Up to 50OC (T50)
(b) Ambient temperature - 5ºC to 55ºC
(c) Normal operating pressure range – 16 bar (MAP 16)
(e) Hydraulic test - 26 bar gauge for 1 minute
(f) Head loss class delta P40
Materials
Corrosion-resistant materials shall be employed throughout and parts which are in contact
with the water flowing through shall be non-toxic and non-tainting. Whilst plastic materials
may be used for the measuring mechanism, the meter body shall be made of epoxy powder
coated cast iron.
The pressure casings integral to the meters and component parts must be of adequate
strength for the purpose of which they are to be used.
Performance Requirements
The particulars and performance of the meters offered shall conform to the following
requirements: SABS 1529-1-2006 Class C and Actual
A mark indicating the direction of flow shall be borne on both sides of the meter body in
order to facilitate its correct installation at site.
The meter shall be approved to U0/D0 – no upstream or downstream straight pipe
requirement.
Measuring Method
The meter shall operate using the Woltman principle where a helical vane rotor rotates in the
flow stream.
The rotations of the rotor will be transmitted electronically to the register where volume
passed and flow-rate will be displayed.
Registration Counter
The register shall be LCD type with 7 main index numbers of height 12 mm minimum plastic
rotary piston meter with liquid sealed mechanical transmission/flow with direct reading
counter, high reliability, high precision.
Sub-units and Flow-rate will also be displayed, in figures 6mm high minimum.
Sub-units shall be clearly segregated with a red border.
An infra-red communications port shall be provided for on-site communication and upgrades.
Pulse output
The register shall feature integrated pulse outputs. These shall include a pulse output
compensated for reverse flow and a pulse output emitting all pulses with a direction flag. (i.e.
AMR ready)
Encoded Output
The meters shall be capable of encoded data output for reading via an inductive coil using
an appropriate reading device.
End Connections
The meters offered shall be provided with integral flange connections, raise faced and drilled
to BS EN1092-2: 1997 PN 16 rating.
Overall Length
The meter shall be available in the following standard lengths.
Marking
The meter shall be clearly and indelibly marked with the following information:
a. Name or trademark of the manufacturer
b. Meter serial number where first two digits indicate year of manufacture.
c. Direction of flow on both sides of the body
d. Unit of measurement
e. Meter type and size
f. Maximum admissible pressure
g. Pressure loss class
h. Temperature class
i. Straight pipe requirement
j. Metrological approvals and flow values.
Spare parts for all Water Meters offered must be locally available and still be available for a
period of ten years after purchase of the water meter.
