1 Lesson-Plan Science8

The document is a lesson plan for an 8th grade science class on typhoons. It includes objectives to identify and explain how typhoons develop. The lesson consists of preliminary activities, a review, motivation through a video, and a lesson proper with activities analyzing typhoon formation pictures and sequencing formation events. Students will apply their understanding through group work and present weather reports on typhoons in the next class.

Name: JESSA MAE T. LIG-ANG

Grade and Section: Grade 8- Cattleya
Subject: SCIENCE 8
Time: 8:00am – 9:00am

I. OBJECTIVES:
 Identify what is Typhoon.
 Explain how typhoon develops.

II. SUBJECT MATTER:

 Topic: Understanding Typhoon
 Learning Competency: S8ES-IIf-21
 Reference: Science 8 Self-Learning Module, youtube.com
 Materials: PowerPoint, Cartolina, and pen

III. PROCEDURES:

A. Preliminary Activity
 Prayer
 Greetings
 Checking of Attendance
 Reminders (if any)
B. Review
 Short review
 Activity: Share Me!
 Directions: Share to the class what is the picture all about.
C. Motivation
 The teacher will show a moving picture on the screen about typhoon. Then the
teacher will ask the students about what they have observed.
(Targeting indicator 3 – use of ICT)

D. Lesson Proper
 ACTIVITY 1- Picture Analysis
o The teacher will distribute a picture of a typhoon formation and the
students will put it at the correct number of its sequence then they will
describe the picture how it happened.

 ACTIVITY 2- Sequencing of Events

o The students will number the following events of typhoon formation as to
their own understanding.
(Targeting indicator number 1 – Math; and indicator 3)

 ANALYSIS

o Why do you think that in times of every storm we must remain calm?
o How are we going to stay safe when there is a typhoon?
o What are the things that we need to prepare when experiencing a storm?

 ABSTRACTION
The teacher will discuss the new topic about “Understanding Typhoon”

 WHAT IS A TYPHOON?
o A tropical storm that formed over the north west Pacific Ocean.

 HOW TYPHOONS ARE FORMED?

1. Typhoons start as a tropical thunderstorm. The strong winds pull in moisture
from the oceans.

2. Thunderstorms will convert the moisture into heat. Such heat causes more air to
flow to the center of the storm, causing evaporation.

3. All the heat and air flow toward the eye creating the typhoon.

 PRE- CONDITIONS FOR TYPHOONS

o There are seven atmospheric conditions that cause a typhoon to create such
as;
 Pre-existing disturbance
 Warm ocean water
 Low atmospheric stability
 Sufficient Coriolis force
 Moist mid-atmosphere
 Upper atmosphere divergence
 MECHANISM TO CAUSE TYPHOON FORMATION
o The foremost common mechanism to cause a typhoon to develop is the
monsoon trough.
o This could be an extension of the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ)
where a cyclonic spin has developed.
o Another reason for typhoon formation is from the Tropical Upper
Tropospheric Trough (TUTT).
o The upper air is cold in nature as compared to its surrounding environment
o A typical air mass center that forms a typhoon starts at the lower levels and
is warm compared to its environment.
o If a Tropical Upper Tropospheric Trough is low, it gradually warms and
takes on tropical characteristics.

 PRESENTING OF PUBLIC STORM WARNING SIGNALS

 APPLICATION
(Group work activity – Differentiated activities) – [Targeting indicator 1&2]

Group 1: FORM ME!

Directions: Draw the proper sequence of typhoon formation to the given material
in 5mins.

Group 2: SHOW ME!

Directions: Act out the sequence of how the typhoons are formed.
SCORING RUBRIC
Content 15 points
Creativity 15 points
Total 30 points

Group 3: TyPOEM!
Directions: Write a five-sentence poem about typhoons in the material given.

E. Generalization
A typhoon develops when winds blow into areas of the ocean where the
water is warm. During this stage winds gather moisture and rise, while colder air
moves in below. This creates pressure, which causes the winds to maneuver very
quickly. The winds rotate, or spin, around a center called a watch fixed. The
warmer air and moisture there's, the more intense the winds.
IV. EVALUATION
Activity– TRUE or FALSE
Directions: Read each statement below carefully. Write T on the line if you think a
statement is TRUE. Place an F on the line if you think the statement is FALSE.
___1. Typhoons are more violent than hurricanes.
___2. Typhoons come from warm waters in the ocean.
___3. High atmospheric stability could also be one of the factors in the typhoon
formation.
___4. When all of the heat and air from the ocean flow toward the eye, it creates typhoon.
___5. Tropical Upper Tropospheric Trough (TUTT) could also be a cause of typhoon
formation.

How will you protect yourself and your family from the disaster that brought by
typhoon? (Answer in 2-3 sentences)

V. ASSIGNMENT
Direction: Create a weather report script about the current weather of typhoon and
present it in the class next meeting.
