Problems Questions With Answers 2020 Incidence Prevalence

This document provides examples of calculating epidemiological measures from public health data. It includes examples of calculating incidence rates, prevalence rates, case fatality rates, and proportional mortality rates for conditions like tuberculosis, leprosy, and leukemia. For each example, it presents the relevant population and case data and shows the calculations to determine the requested epidemiological measures.

General Epidemiology-Incidence & Prevalence

1. Calculate the incidence rate of T.B., point prevalence rate on 01/01/2012, point prevalence rate on
31.12.2012 and period prevalence during 2012.

Population 10000
No. of cases of T.B as on 01.01.2012 200
New cases occurred during the year 2012 40
Died due to T.B 10
Cured of T.B 15
Migrate out 5

Answer:

Incidence rate of TB = 40/10000 x 1000 = 4 per 1000 per yr.

Point prevalence on 1/1/2012 = 200/10000 x 100 = 2 per 1000.

Pont prevalence on 31/1/2012 = 200+400- (10+15-5) /10000 x 100 = 2.1 per 1000.

Period prevalence on 2012 = 240 /10000 x 100 = 2.4 per 1000 per year.

2. In a randomly selected primary health center having a population of 35000, there were 6 cases of leprosy
as on 31.12.2014. During the year 2015, the number of new cases of leprosy detected in that PHC was 7 and
10 cases were released from the treatment. Calculate the following: Incidence rate of leprosy in 2015 &
Prevalence rate of leprosy as on 31.12.2015

Answer

a. Incidence rate of leprosy in 2015 = 7 x 1000/ 35000 = 0.2 new cases of leprosy / 1000 population

b. Prevalence rate of leprosy as on 31/12/2015 = (6 + 7) - 10 /35000 x 1000

= 0.857 cases of leprosy/10,000 population

3. In a district with 10,00,000 people, there were 4000 cases of Tuberculosis as on 1 st January 2014.
During the year 2014, 500 new cases were detected. 1000 persons completed their fullcourse of
treatment and were declared as cured. There were 8,000 deaths in the district, of which 100 were due
to Tuberculosis in the year 2014. Calculate a. The prevalence of the disease for the year 2014,
b.Incidence of the disease for 2014, c. Case fatality rate d. Proportional mortality rate (presume that
the population is the same throughout the year).

Answer

Prevalence = [(4000 + 500) – (1000 +100)]) X 100 = 0.34%

10,00,000

Incidence = 500 X 1000 = 0.5 per 1000

10,00,000

CFR = 100 X 100= 2.2%

4500

PMR = 100 X 100 = 1.25%

8000

4. A village has a population of 2500. During the year 2016, there were 40 new cases and 60 old cases
of TB. A total of 10 deaths occurred due to the same disease in 2016. Calculate for tuberculosis in
2016, a. Incidence b. Prevalence c. Case fatality rate.

Total population of village = 2500

New cases = 40

Old cases = 60

Total cases of TB in 2016 = 100

Total deaths due to TB = 10

Answer

Incidence = (40/2500)x 1000 = 16 per 1000 population at risk

Prevalence = (100/2500)x 100 = 4 %

CFR = (10/100)x 100 = 10%

5. The following data are available for a community,

- Mid year population for 2013 – 1,17,000
- Population as on 31 st December, 2013 – 1,19,000
- Already existing cases of leukemia at the beginning of the year 2013 was 24
- New cases of leukemia during the year 2013 was 99
Calculate the following: Incidence rate for the year 2013, Period prevalence rate for the year
2013, Point prevalence rate as on 31st December 2013.

Answer

a. Incidence rate of leukemia for the year 2013 = 99 x 1000 /1,17,000 = 0.846 new cases/1000 population

b. Period Prevalence rate for year 2013 = 24 + 99/ 1,17,000 x 1000 = 1.05 cases / 1000 population

c. Point Prevalence rate = 24 + 99 / 1,19,000 x 1000 = 1.03 cases/ 1000 population
