(Building Enhancing New Literacies Across the Curriculum)
Chapter 1: Introduction to 21st Century Literacies
Activity 1: Reflection
1. As a pre-service teacher, what kind of written materials should you be able to read
and understand? Are you reading these materials? How well can you understand them?
As a pre-service teacher, the kinds of written materials I should able to read and
understand are the following:
1. Text books
2. Books
3. Online texts
Yes, I am reading these materials for me to be able to learn, understand and to
gain more knowledge to such topic I am looking for.
I really understand them through the help of dictionary when I am encountering
new vocabulary words that is not familiar to mine.
2. Which of the new literacies are you knowledgeable in? Which of the new literacies do
you lack knowledge in?
I am knowledgeable in all the new literacies.
Activity 2: Evaluate!
1. Compare and contrast the traditional concept of literacy to the modern view of
literacy?
The traditional concept of literacy is to be able to understand the meanings of
words in their application while the modern view of literacy will be dynamic for the
multiples of options and their connected and unconnected functions.
2. Describe the changes in the 21st century that have led to the rise of new literacy?
“New literacies” that arise from new technologies include things like text-
messaging, blogging, social networking, podcasting, and videomaking. These
digital technologies alter and extend our communication abilities, often blending
text, sound, and imagery. Although connected to older, “offline” practices, these
technologies change what it means to both “read” and “write” texts. (They change
the meaning of “text,” as well.) These rise of “new literacies” necessary to wield
these new technologies effectively place new demands on all of us – not just on
students. We are all expected to move much more quickly to identify problems,
for example; to know where to find information to help us address those
problems – often on our own; to evaluate and synthesize information from a
number of sources in order to try to solve those problems; to communicate with
others about problems and potential solutions; and to monitor the solutions we’ve
found and stay up-to-date with new issues as they arise.
Reflection:
1. How critical is our role as teachers to help our learners gain these fundamental skills?
Teachers play a very important role in a student’s life. As a teacher, one must
bring out the best in students and inspire them to strive for greatness. Students
are considered as the future of the nation and humankind, and a teacher is
believed to be a credible guide for their advancement. Not only do they guide
students in academics or extracurricular activities, but teachers are also
responsible for shaping a child’s future, making him/her a better human being. A
teacher imparts knowledge, good values, tradition, modern-day challenges and
ways to resolve them within students. A good teacher is an asset to the students.
Can we all relate to Teacher Dan’s case? If so, let us further understand his case by
answering the following probing questions:
1. Based on Teacher Dan’s case, how important are the fundamental skills to our
learners?
Fundamental skills are very important to our learners for them to learn the basic
skills up to a very critical way of thinking. Teachers are the builders of those skills
of the students. These skills may help the learners to be globally competitive.
2. What is/are your role/s to help these learners gain these fundamental skills in order to
enjoy success in learning?
Teachers play a very important role in a student’s life. As a teacher, one must
bring out the best in students and inspire them to strive for greatness. Students
are considered as the future of the nation and humankind, and a teacher is
believed to be a credible guide for their advancement. Not only do they guide
students in academics or extracurricular activities, but teachers are also
responsible for shaping a child’s future, making him/her a better human being. A
teacher imparts knowledge, good values, tradition, modern-day challenges and
ways to resolve them within students. A good teacher is an asset to the students.
3. What is/are your role/s to further strengthen these fundamental skills in each of your
learners for them to thrive further?
My role is to encourage them to learn more things even they face a lot of
struggles in learning. I will advice to them to read, read and read and bit by bit,
try to understand what they have read.
4. What have you realized about your impact on your learners’ literacy skills
development
regardless of their grade level?
I realized that as a teacher, it is my role to impower every learner to become
better and to understand and be knowledgeable even in a very small thing.
Activity 3: Reflection!
1. As Education student, how deep your level of comprehension? And how can you
improve if needs enhancement?
As an education student, my level of comprehension is more than the basic
because I always tried to understand and push myself to learn new things every
day. As a teacher we should always be an extra ordinary.
2. How will you develop the literacy of your students in the near future?
As a teacher, I will provide the necessary framework using concepts such as
previewing text, reading with a purpose, predicting and making connections and
the use of graphic organizers for me to develop the literacy of my student in the
near future. In addition to quick literacy assignments in class, students need to
develop reading stamina.
Evaluate
1. Have you interacted with people who have a different culture form yours? How was
your interaction with them? Was it clear? Was it productive? Was it respectful? What
could you have done for a better interaction?
Since we are living in a globalized and diverse world, it is expected to interact
with people who have a different culture from us. When I am interacting with
people who has different culture, I always try to be sensitive and understand our
differences. I respect their traditions for them to respect mine. We always end up
having good connection through better interaction and communication and it
made our interaction productive and better.
2. What is your attitude toward people who have a different culture from yours? Do you
celebrate how they are different from you? Do you look down on them?
My attitude is more likely understanding, respectful and sensitive when I am
interacting with people who had different culture from mine.
3. What skills and knowledge do you need to improve in to become multiculturally
literate?
The skills and knowledge I need to improve in to become multiculturally literate is
my holistic understanding towards the differences of each other specially when it
comes to our tradition and skills.
4. Why should you as an individual respect and value people who are different from
you?
Respect begets respect. As a person, we all know that each and ever one of us
has a difference with each other and as a person it is our responsibility to respect
and value that difference, we have. Cultural understanding and universal
respect5 is what the world needs.
5. Explain what multi-cultural literacy is?
Multicultural literacy refers to the skills involved when uncovering bias in regards
to culture, as well as the ability to take different perspectives to gain a more
humane perspective. It is understanding ones ability and learning new things
about other culture that makes the world diverse.
