“Holacracy.” That’s the word of the day at Zappos, the Nevada-based online shoe and apparel
retailer. During a four-hour, year-end employee meeting in 2013, CEO Tony Hsieh
announced that he was eliminating the company’s traditional…..

Q1-17: What is a holacracy?

Ans: It’s an organizational system with no job titles, no managers and no top-down hierarchy
with upper, middle or lower levels where decisions can get hung up. It aims to distribute the
authority of decision-making and innovation through teams that govern themselves, instead
of a classical hierarchical system where authority and decision-making are concentrated at the
top, the independent teams and their interconnectedness are better known as holarchy.

Q1-18: What benefits do you see to an organization where there are no job titles, no
managers and no hierarchy?
Ans: Holacracy is claimed to increase agility, efficiency, transparency, innovation and
accountability within an organization. The approach encourages individual team members to
take initiative and gives them a process in which their concerns or ideas can be addressed.
Proponents of holacracy argue that it empowers team members to freely contribute ideas
much like in an idea meritocracy. It is possible because employees from all levels are
autonomous and are given the freedom to discuss ideas they believe will benefit the
organization. In addition to an idea of meritocracy, holacracy also allows fewer layers
between customers and employees and it is argued that such a structure allows for a quicker
decision-making process that improves customer satisfaction.

Q1-19: What challenges does a holacratic approach have?

Ans: Holacratic approach has lots of challenges. Holacracy doesn't give a step by step guide
on how to run a company. It reduces control. The company has to get rid of old habits. It's
hard to change course and to get everyone on board.

Q1-20: Discuss why you would or would not like to work in an organization like this.
Ans: Yes, I would like to work in an organization like this. The reasons behind my decision
are given below:
 It eliminates waste and unnecessary distractions.
 Giving me control over my own independent decisions and actions.
 Greater motivation.
 Transparency.
