SLAC-EXAM-Intro. To Creative Writing

This document is a preliminary examination for an Intro to Creative Writing course. It contains questions about the short story "Door Forever" that the student answered. The main characters are elderly neighbors Zheng Ruoki and Pan Xue'er who have feelings for each other but have psychological obstacles. When Zheng suddenly dies, it surprises and affects Pan, though she does not cry at the hospital. The situation becomes complicated for Pan and others after she moves out. The student analyzed characters' reactions and discovered an unexpected painted door in Zheng's room, possibly how they secretly communicated. The student concluded that if the two reached out more, their story could have been happier instead of ending in regret.

COLLEGE DEPARTMENT
PRELIMINARY EXAMINATION
SUBJECT: INTRO. TO CREATIVE WRITING
2nd Semester 2021-2022
Name: Escario, Kezia P. Score:
Course: BSBA 2 HRDM Date: 3/4/22

I. Read the story Door Forever by Shao Baojian and answer the following questions:

1. The story’s main player/

 Old bachelor Zheng Ruoki and Old maid Pan Xue’er
2. His/her ordinary goal/
 They love each other, but they haven't been able to overcome psychological
obstacles to their relationship.
3. Dramatic encounter with other parties.
 The neighbors can only see their brief interactions because they are unhappy with
their lack of development.
4. A surprising event affecting the main player.
 When Zheng suddenly died, their neighbor's hopes for the two of them to form at
least a friendship.
5. Its impact/effect on the main player.
 Pan did not cry when Zheng died upon arriving at the hospital, despite the fact that
her eyes were red. Pan moved out after Zheng died.
6. Complicating situations for main player and the other party.
 The situation became even more perplexing and painful after Pan left
7. Main player’s reaction 1
 When pan moved out, the neighbors were confused and frustrated.
8. Main player’s reaction 2 (dramatic consequences of the reaction)
 With the exception of her eyes reddening after Zheng's death, Pan had never
shown any emotion throughout the story. Based on the story's plot point, I think
I’m sure she expects more than Zheng's usual greetings.
9. Main player’s extreme and inevitable discovery (good or bad)
 The neighbors noticed a door painted on the wall of Zheng's room but I’m not sure
what does it means, but the neighbors appear to have suspected the two of them of
secretly seeing each other through the door.
10. Return to original goal.
 Based on my understanding, if the two had reached out or made a greater effort to
reach out to one another, their story could have blossomed into something
beautiful rather than a full-fledged story of regret and uncertaint and their journey
began with one-word responses to each other and ended with regret.

11. Reversals
 Pan's decision to leave not only took her belongings with her, but it also altered the
drama's course. It was impossible to know what, why, or how inside the story.
There were several flaws that couldn't be explained, aside from the use of
assumption.
12. Main player’s realization.
 Because Zheng knew Pan was a florist, I assumed he was trying to connect with
her or attract her attention through the flowers he neatly arranged in his blue
translucent flower vase. Maybe he had a heart attack after realizing that no matter
how hard he tried, his strategy was destined for failure. In regards of Pan, I think
Zheng's death was a wake-up call for her.
