03: HIS FIRST FLIGHT

INTRODUCTION
This is an imaginary story which conveys that one learns by being courageous and not
by sitting idle.

A young seagull is fed lovingly by his parents. But when the time comes for him to fly, he
is quite afraid. At last, his mother hits upon a plan by persuading him with food in her
beak. And the seagull finally learns how to fly.

Theme
• A young seagull didn’t have SELF-BELIEF to fly

• It lacked SELF-CONFIDENCE to go for the first attempt

• The bird needed COURAGE to overcome fear

• Motivation / encouragement from the PARENTS played a very important role in the
seagull’s first flight

Hesitation – trial – error – success

shore.
 Success is ten percent inspiration and ninety percent perspiration
 Nothing is born into this world without LABOUR.
 Coming out of your comfort zone is TOUGH in the beginning, CHAOTIC in the
middle, and AWESOME in the end… because in the end, it shows you a whole new
world!! Make an attempt…

failure, the only thing you can do is
 get started. Yeah, you might fail if you try but if you never try you will always fail.

Question-Answer
Q. 1 : Why was the young seagull afraid to fly? Do you think all young birds are afraid to
make their first flight? Do you think a human baby also finds it a challenge to take its first
step?

Ans: The young seagull was afraid to fly because it was his first flight and he feared of
falling and hurting himself. He thought his wings would not support him while flying.

Yes, it is natural that doing something for the first time is a bit challenging a nd fearful.
Similarly, a human baby is also afraid of taking the first step and finds it challenging
when it learns to crawl or stand up without support.

Q. 2 : Do you sympathise with the seagull? Give reasons.

Ans: Flying is a natural instinct of birds. But the young seagull developed a fright of
flight. We sympathise with him because he had to suffer a lot before he got o ver his fear
of flying. He had to bear the taunts of his family. He had to go without food for twenty-
four hours.

Q. 3 : “The sight of the food maddened him.” What does this suggest? What compelled
the young seagull to finally fly?

Answer : The young seagull was very hungry. It was his hunger that ultimately compelled
him to fly. His hunger intensified when he saw his mother tearing at a piece of fish that
lay at her feet. He cried to her, begging her to get some food. When his mother came
towards him with food in her beak, he screamed with joy and anticipation. However, she
stopped mid-way. He wondered why she did not come nearer. Not being able to resist or
control his hunger any longer, he dived at the food in his mother’s beak. At that moment,
his hunger overpowered his fear of the great expanse of sea beneath the cliff. Finally,
this plunge was followed by the natural reaction of his body, i.e. to fly.

Q. 4 : “They were beckoning to him, calling shrilly.” Why did the seagull’s father and
mother threaten him and cajole him to fly?
Ans: Seagull’s parents had tried everything but he was reluctant to fly due to fear of
falling down. He looked at his brothers and sister but wouldn’t make any efforts. That’s
why the whole family had left him alone and threatened and cajoled him to come but
every effort went in vain.

Q. 5 : How did the young seagull and his family celebrate his first flight?

Answer : The young seagull dived at the fish due to hunger and fell outwards and
downwards into space. He moved downwards and outwards and landed safely on the sea
and floated on it without any fear. When the young seagull started flying and got over his
fear, his family screamed around him out of joy. They praised him and offered him scraps
of dog-fish out of delight as he made a successful attempt.
