1. Why are deficiency symptoms of immobile elements less pronounced in older than in
younger leaves? (5 pts)
The reason why there are deficient symptoms manifesting in new growth is because
immobile elements are not easily transported inside the plant. On the other hand, we have the
mobile elements that can be scavenged from older development and transported to where they’re
needed when they become limiting, thus, results in deficiencies in older growth. The symptoms of
vitamin deficits usually take a certain length of time to appear once development begins. To allow for
symptom expression, early growth is frequently insufficiently rapid or of sufficient volume. When the
plant is most vigorous or when there is a significant demand for nutrients such as during fruit
development, this is where deficiencies are generally discovered.
2. Do plants commonly exhibit deficiency symptoms of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen? Why? (5
pts)
Even though the elements such as Carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen are needed in vast amounts
by plants and are widely available in the environment, the deficiency symptoms of these elements are
uncommon in plants. Moreover, green plants may convert these elements from raw materials
derived from soil, water, or the atmosphere using the energy given by photosynthesis.
The pH measures the acidity or alkalinity of soils. pH 7.0 is neutral on the pH scale. Acidic is
below 7.0, and basic or alkaline is above 7.0. The pH of the soil influences the availability of nutrients
for plant growth. Aluminum and manganese can become more available and hazardous to plants in
very acidic soil, while calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium are less available. Phosphorus and most
micronutrients become less accessible in excessively alkaline soil.
