If the P.E. of an electron is –6.8 eV in hydrogen atom then what
is the K.E and Energy of orbit where electron exist ?
D None
Solution:
Limitations:
● He could not explain the line spectra of atoms containing more than one electron.
● Bohr could not explain the de broglie’s concept of dual nature of matter.
● Bohr could not explain splitting of spectral lines in presence of electrical field
(Stark effect) and magnetic field (Zeeman effect)
Emission Absorption
Continuous Line
Emission spectra
When the radiation emitted from some source e.g. from the sun or by passing
electric discharge through a gas at low pressure or by heating some substance to
high temperature etc, is passed directly through the prism and then received on
the photographic plate, the spectrum obtained is called ‘Emission spectrum’ .
Formation of emission spectrum
If the atom gains energy the electron passes from a lower energy level to a higher energy
level, energy is absorbed that means a specific wavelength is absorbed. Consequently, a
dark line will appear in the spectrum. This dark line constitutes the absorption spectrum.
Continuous spectrum
When white light from some source such as sun or bulb is analysed by passing
through a prism, it splits up into seven different wide bands of colour from violet
to red (like rainbow). These colour are so continuous that each of them merges
into the next. Hence the spectrum is called as continuous spectrum.
Line spectra
A n=5
B n=9
C n=6
D n=8
In H atom if e– moves, from nth orbit to 1st orbit by transition in
multi steps, if there are total number of lines in spectrum are 10
then find out the value of n.
A n=5
B n=9
C n=6
D n=8

C 1127.30 Å
D 911.7 Å
