Solution:
Limitations:
● He could not explain the line spectra of atoms containing more than one electron.

● He could not explain the presence of multispectra lines.

● Bohr could not explain the de broglie’s concept of dual nature of matter.

● Bohr could not explain splitting of spectral lines in presence of electrical field
(Stark effect) and magnetic field (Zeeman effect)

● He could not explain Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle.

Hydrogen spectrum
Spectra is an array of entities (such as light waves or particle) ordered
in accordance with the magnitudes of a common physical property
(such as wavelength).
Classification of spectra

Emission Absorption

Continuous Line
Emission spectra

When the radiation emitted from some source e.g. from the sun or by passing
electric discharge through a gas at low pressure or by heating some substance to
high temperature etc, is passed directly through the prism and then received on
the photographic plate, the spectrum obtained is called ‘Emission spectrum’ .
Formation of emission spectrum
If the atom gains energy the electron passes from a lower energy level to a higher energy
level, energy is absorbed that means a specific wavelength is absorbed. Consequently, a
dark line will appear in the spectrum. This dark line constitutes the absorption spectrum.
Continuous spectrum

When white light from some source such as sun or bulb is analysed by passing
through a prism, it splits up into seven different wide bands of colour from violet
to red (like rainbow). These colour are so continuous that each of them merges
into the next. Hence the spectrum is called as continuous spectrum.
Line spectra

When an electric discharge is passed through a gas at low pressure light is

emitted. If this light is resolved by a spectroscope, It is found that some
isolated coloured lines are obtained on a photographic plate separated from
each other by dark spaces. This spectrum is called line spectrum.
Each line in the spectrum corresponds to a particular wavelength. Each
element gives its own characteristic spectrum
Absorption spectra
When white light from any source is first passed through the solution or vapours of a
chemical substance and then analysed by the spectroscope, it is observed that some dark
lines are obtained in the continuous spectrum. These dark lines are supposed to result from
the fact that when white light (containing radiations of many wavelengths) is passed
through the chemical substance, radiations of certain wavelengths are absorbed, depending
upon the nature of the element.
Formation of Absorption spectrum
If the atom loses energy, the electron passes from higher to a lower energy level,
energy is released and a spectral line of specific wavelength is emitted. This line
constitutes the emission spectrum.
Emission spectrum of hydrogen
Hydrogen spectrum

● It was observed that atomic spectrum of hydrogen is a discontinuous line

spectrum where some wavelengths are missing in between.

● When an electric discharge is passed through gaseous hydrogen, the H 2

molecule dissociate and the energetically excited hydrogen atoms produced
emit electromagnetic radiation of discrete frequency.
Hydrogen spectrum
Hydrogen spectrum
● The hydrogen spectrum consists of several series of lines named after their
discoveries.
