internships can teach you more about what you do AND what you dont want to do.

No ones career path is a straight line. Everyone starts off with a vision of their ideal job, but this vision is really just a guess based purely on hypotheticals. A funny thing often happens when someone starts working at their ideal job, they realize its not so ideal for them after all. Would you rather make this realization as an intern or as a fulltime hire after graduation? Internships are a unique opportunity that you will never again encounter throughout your career. This is your chance to test drive different positions to see which ride you enjoy most. Utilize it! Use your summers (and maybe even a fall or spring semester if your school allows it) to intern. Internships provide you with INVALUABLE soft skills: Ideally an internship will provide you with work experience that is directly related to your major. If your internship falls short in this department, keep in mind that you are learning something else that may be even more valuable in the long run. ALL internships teach you soft skills, and every employer is looking for soft skills (which is why behavioral interviewing is so prevalent). Most employers rank interpersonal, communication and teamwork skills above technical aptitude. Theres no better way to acquire these skills than to jump into a corporate environment. It doesnt matter if youll be working for a small start-up or a Fortune 500 company. Regardless youll be learning firsthand how to work with coworkers of all ages, function in a staff meeting, wrestle with a fax machine, communicate with a supervisor, and maybe even navigate the company picnic. This is truly on-the-job training! You may not personally see a difference in yourself, but I promise you will leave a bit wiser, more mature, more confident, and a better candidate for the next internship or full-time job.

A student spends his whole school life mugging up the chapters, theories and lessons of different levels in different classes. They are ought to learn each and every thing by heart, and the same is

tested in the exams conducted by schools and institutions. These institutes from the very beginning are following the traditional formats of teaching and conduction exams. This approach is mainly found in the Indian schools and colleges, which are instilled with the powers of making the students, mug all their teachings, all the foreign institutions and universities, give more importance to practical training. Though theoretical learning is necessary and a must for the students to learn the basics of the study processes, practical knowledge of the subject is an aspect, which is must to be covered by all the students in their respective fields. Such practical trainings are very important to be covered in the academic syllabus of the students to give them an in- depth knowledge of their subjects. Many schools are adopting this new culture of practical training as a part of their school curriculum, to make their students aware of the practical side of their studies. These training sessions have not only be opted by students in the schools, but many graduations and post graduation schools have training and internship periods assigned as a part of their course structure. Many courses like, engineering, medicine, mass communications, aviation, tourism are the industries, whose colleges have contracts with major players of the respective industries, and as a result of which they allow students to work in their organisations, as an intern or trainee. One of such educational courses is MBA, in which practical training is supposed to be the most crucial and important part of the course duration. Students do a lot of hard work to earn MBA internships in large group and companies, with their focus mainly on the multi nationals. Many of the students also prefer doing internships from the foreign companies, to get more detailed and enlarging their arena of technical and practical knowledge. Looking at the importance and the demand of the MBA internship programs, companies themselves have started internship programs for students, wherein they can directly apply during their certified duration for internship.

You have just graduated from an A- or B-grade college and are all set to go through the intensive interview process with a killer cover letter, great marks and glowing recommendations. But your resume misses out to mention one important item - internship. If you think that this one miss can cause no harm, think again! You need to be extremely lucky to get the position at your dream company without internship by your side. Such is the importance of an internship program that a student is required to go through to achieve a good job in a good company. Graduating students with paid or unpaid internships are at a higher chance of landing up at a full-time position. Due to this vital advantage of obtaining a better career, students opt for undergoing internships even as undergraduates. Hence, it is not unusual for graduates to take up internships in the hopes of turning it into a permanent position or at least building a fruitful resume. With rapid changes in the economy, the nature of work is, as well, changing drastically. Read through the following lines to know more on the significance of internship. Significance Of Internship Provides Experience & Knowledge Classroom studies are confined only to books and theoretical learning. Application of these theories and lectures delivered in classrooms differ a little from the set format. Through internship, students get not only get a first-hand experience of these theories, but also learn the applications of these theories in real challenges. Also, the company exposure allows students to enhance their knowledge and contribute it to the company in their specialized fields. For example, doing an internship in an advertising company exposes the students to the various processes that are equally important as those taught in the school as strategies.

Improves Skills Several skills and tasks are necessary to accomplish a job effectively and efficiently. These skills are imparted to a student during his tenure as an intern. It exposes him to skills, such as oral and written communication, presentation, leadership, planning, time, and project management. No matter how simple or difficult the task is, students are taught to take up the challenge and polish their skills to prove themselves to their seniors or employers. Boosts Self-Confidence Doing an internship is a great learning experience in itself. The entire journey of internship allows a student to identify his strengths and weaknesses, and use both of them to the best advantage of his job and company. While going through the interview process for entering the company internship, the first question put up to students is about narrating their positive and negative traits and how they can prove themselves fit for the said position. This real life experience allows them to judge themselves as to where they stand and identify their abilities of completing the given tasks. All in all, undergoing an intensive internship program boosts the self-confidence of students and motivates them towards facing big opportunities in future. New Career Opportunities Internship is the first ladder to success. Doing an internship in a specialized field helps students to build up a good network. When a student enters a company, he is not regarded as an intern (despite being one), but as an employee who will give his best to the company. Further, if the intern is successful in proving himself worthy for the company, he may just land up getting a permanent position in the same company after completing the internship program. Real Corporate Feel Another major advantage of doing an internship is working in the real corporate environment, without having to leave school or college. Internship programs are carried out during school breaks and last for a month to a year, thus allowing students to experience the workplace atmosphere. These programs are seen as great opportunities to utilize the time and knowledge to gain understanding and experience and make the most out of it in terms of converting it into a prospective career.
The internship program is the most important and most practical part of your college degree. The classes you have had will be helpful and useful; however, the actual experiences that you have in a classroom cannot be completely addressed in a textbook or by a single person. This is not said to be demeaning to the wonderful professors out there. There are just so many spontaneous, unique situations that you will have to deal with as a teacher; hands on is the best way to get exposure. During the first few years of my teaching, I often felt like the majority of my time in my major classes would have been better spent in an actual classroom. Some states have since started moving in this direction and I think it is great!! Many of the things that I had to learn and discover "on my own" could have been discovered before I took my own classroom. If you are getting ready to start your internship, grasp to it, enjoy it, and completely take an advantage of it! You won't regret a single moment.

Internship programs exist as a part of the educational requirements in many fields, including teaching, medicine, and psychology. Basically speaking, internship programs provide exposure to actual situations which the individual will encounter during their career. Whereas school provides academic background, internship programs are where students learn to apply academic information to real-life situations. For example, an internship program in teaching may provide an intern with the opportunity to actually teach students in a safe atmosphere and under the supervision of an experienced teacher who can monitor and correct any problem areas that may arise. By the time an internship program is completed, a student should have not only academic knowledge of a subject but also real-life "hands on" experience. In many career fields an internship is necessary before licensure or accreditation is allowed.
