TITLE

A Strategic Study of the Operation Theatre as a department

SATETMENT OF PURPOSE

To study the location, planning and staffing of O.T. for effective utilization of the O.T. To provide with the best cost effective measure to enhance the operations without compromising the quality of surgeries.

OBJECTIVES
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

To study the location of O.T. in relation to access to patients and workload of the department as the part of a hospital. To study the design of O.T. to make its functioning smooth and comfortable over long and tense working hours. To maximize the number of cases that can be done on a given day while minimizing the required resources. To effectively manage the intercommunication between anesthetist, surgeon, technician, nurse and other staff to increase the productivity of O.T. To study the sterilization procedures and infection control procedures taken to minimize the post operative infection. To study the cost effective measures for successful O.T OPERATIONS

SCOPE OF STUDY I will be studying the location and design of the Gastroenterology O.T. of three hospitals for which proposed hospitals are K.E.M. hospital, CMC Ludhiana, DMC Ludhiana. Patient flow for the elective and emergency procedures. Furthermore the staff pattern, equipments used and the downtime of the equipment. The fumigation procedures adopted by the hospital to control infection. Reports of the culture swab of the O.T. No. of operations expected in a year and the number of operations carried out. No. of hours available and utilized. No. of operations delayed, postponed and cancelled and specific cause of the same. Manpower structure and manpower cost. Consumables cost and Material cost per operation.

Utilization of Capital Assets. From the above data i will calculate the cost per surgery. The productivity must be not only giving more surgeries but quality outcomes with better results and less mortality coupled with disease free error free surgeries. To ensure this I will calculate total no. of postoperative infection, nosocomial infections, cross infections and re-do surgeries. Patient grievances in a given year. BENEFITS OF THE STUDY Productive operation theatre is based on best practices, looks at eliminating errors, having systems of briefing and debriefing and learning fron near misses. So it will provide your hospital to compare your work with other hospitals like trust hospitals and even private teaching hospitals. It will dramatically improve the quality and safety of surgical services and make significant efficiency savings. It will help to enhance your O.T as the place of CHOICE to the community at large.
