Part - A
1 If a customer has to wait in a (M/M/1) : ( /FIFO) queue system, 5 min
what is his average waiting time in the queue, if = 8 per hour
and µ = 12 per hour ?
2 What is the probability that a customer has to wait more than 15 0.3679
min to get his service completed in a in a (M/M/1) : ( /FIFO)
queue system, if = 6 per hour and µ =10 per hour
3 If = 4 per hour and µ = 12 per hour in an (M/M/1) : (4/FIFO) 81/121 , 1/5
queuing system, find the probability that there is no customer in
the system. If = µ, what is the value of this probability.
4 Write down the Little’s formulas for the average waiting time in
the system and in the queue for an (M/M/1) : ( k/FIFO) queuing
model.
5 If = 3, per hour, µ =4 per hour and maximum capacity k=7 in a 2.11
(M/M/1) : (k /FIFO) system, find the average number of
customers in the system.

6 Automatic car wash facility operates with only one bay cars arrive = 4 cars per hour,
according to a Poisson process, with mean of 4 cars per hour and may = 6 cars per hour,
wait in the facility’s parking lot if the bay is busy. If the service time for 2, 1.333, 1/2, 1/3
all cars is contact and equal to 10 minutes. Determine Ls , Lq ,W s∧W q
7 Customers arrive at the first class ticket counter of a theatre at a rate of = 12 per hour,
12 per hour. There is one clerk servicing the customer’s at the rate of 30 = 30 per hour,
per hour. (i) What is the probability that there is no customer at the 0.6, 0.064, 0.84,
counter? (ii) What is the probability that there are more than 2 0.8795
customers at the counter? (iii) What is the probability that there is no
customer waiting to be served? (iv) What is the probability that a
customer is being served and nobody is waiting? (v) Probability that a
customer has to wait for at most 4 minutes in the queue?
8 Customers arriving at a watch repair shop according to Poisson process = 1/10 ,
at a rate of one per every 10 minutes and the service time is an = 1/8,
exponential random variable with mean 8 minutes. (i) Find the average 4, 40 min, 3.2, 1/5
number of customers L s in the shop. (ii) Find the average time a
customer spends in the shop Ws (iii) Find the average number of
customer in the queue L q (iv) What is the probability that the server is
idle?
9 At a railway station only one train is handled at a time. The railway
yard is sufficient only for 2 trains to wait, while the other is given signal
to leave the station. Trains arrive at the station at an average rate of 6
per hour and the railway station can handle them on an average of 6
per hour. Assuming Poisson arrivals and Exponential service
distribution find the probabilities for the numbers of trains in the
system. Also find the average waiting time of a new train coming into
the yard. If the handling rate is doubled, how will the above results are
modified?
10 Patients arrive at a clinic according to Poisson distribution at a rate of
30 patients per hour. The waiting room does not accommodate more
than 14 patients. Examination time per patient is exponential with
mean rate of 20 per hour. (i) Find the effective arrival rate at the clinic.
(ii) What is the probability that an arriving patient will not wait? (iii)
What is the expected waiting time until a patient is discharged from
the clinic?
