ATHLETICS (POLE VAULT, HIGH JUMP, LONG JUMP AND


TRIPLE JUMP)
Athletics event can be divided into two.
1. TRACK EVENT: 50m, 100m, 200m, 400m, Hurdles, Relay races, etc
2. FIELD EVENT: These can be divided further into two.
 Throwing events e.g. This involve the throwing of missiles. Examples are shot put, Discus,
Javelin and Hammer Throw.
 Jumping Events: You can either jump for height (High Jump and Pole Vault) or jump for a
distance (Long jump and Triple jump).
JUMP FOR HEIGHT

POLE VAULT
The jumper or athlete uses a fibre glass pole for jumping over a high bar.

 The vaulting poles
 The take -off board
 The runway (40m – 45m long)
 The uprights (3.66m apart)
 The crossbar between 3.86m – 4.52m long.
 The supporting pegs
 The landing foam/mat

COMMON FAULTS IN POLE VAULT


 Poor pole carrying during approach run.
 Late plant
 Offline plant
 Closing the chest to the pole at take-off.
 Tucking or inverting too early.

HIGH JUMP
High jump is a field event in which competitors must jump over a horizontal bar placed at measured
height. There are various methods of jumping over the bar but thr most common is known as
Fosbury flop (1947).

1. The runway 40m – 45m long.
2. The landing mat (6m X 4m X 0.7m)
3. The uprights 4m to 4.04m apart
4. The crossbar

COMMON FAULTS IN HIGH JUMP


 Landing too near the edge of the landing mat.
 Hitting the bar on your way up.
 Hitting the bar while coming down

LONG JUMP
Long jump is a field event in athletics. The event requires a good speed and body control.

LANDING AREA
The landing area should measure 9m by 2.75m.
The take-off board shall be painted white. It shall be placed across the runway about 1m
from the landing pit.

COMMON FAULTS IN JUMPING EVENTS

 Dropping the free leg too soon.


 Forward rotation in flight.
 Forward rotation on landing.
 Sitting backing the sand on landing.

TRIPLE JUMP
This is also referred to as Hop, Step, Jump.

Phases of triple jump


 Approach run
 Hop or take-off
 Step
 Flight
 Jumping
 Landing
The landing pit should measure 5.5m by 2.75m. The runway should be between 40-45m.
The distance from the take-off board and to the landing pit is 11m.

COMMON FAULTS IN TRIPLE JUMP

 Poor jump rhythms (ie big hop, short step) membrane.


 Hop is too high.
 Inactive landings
