DEBATE ASSIGNMENT IS WORTH 15% OF YOUR COURSEWORK:


BELOW IS YOUR DEBATE WRITE-UP. YOU MUST CHOOSE EITHER TOPIC 1 OR TOPIC 2:

Topic 1: Gender quotas is good for Pacific Island Countries (PIC). Here you need
to focus on two to three of these countries: Australia, Papua New Guinea,
Solomon Islands, Samoa and Fiji.

OR

Topic 2: Mining activity is a threat to indigenous way of life and livelihoods in


the Pacific. [Note: this includes Australia, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands
—you must refer to Australia any 2 of these countries]

DUE DATE: DEBATE WILL OPEN ON MOODLE ON FRIDAY 6 MAY 0700 AND CLOSE
ON FRIDAY 20 MAY 2359. I HAVE ALLOWED YOU 15 DAYS TO HAND IN YOUR
ASSIGNMENT AND THERE WILL BE NO FURTHER EXTENSIONS AFTER FRIDAY 20
MAY AT 2359.

Instructions: Students must hand in a written debate assignment worth a total of


15 marks as follows:

MARKING RUBRIC FOR DEBATE:

NOTE THERE MUST BE NO PLAGIARISM IN YOUR DEBATE. IF ANY STUDENT


PLAGIARISES BY COPYING OFF THE INTERNET OR FROM SOMEONE ELSE’S WORK
IN TWO OR MORE POINTS THEN THE WHOLE ASSIGNMENT WILL BE AWARDED A
ZERO. IF STUDENTS WORK TOGETHER AND THERE IS SOME FORM OF COPYING
THEN THE ENTIRE DEBATE WILL BE GIVEN A ZERO.

1. Fill in the Plagiarism Declaration form (see booklet folder) and sign it off and
attach it to your debate assignment.

2. Cover Page and Layout (1 mark) : cover page should contain the title of the
debate topic your full name as in your ID card, your full ID number, the unit code
and title e.g. ETH-501-0 etc, your full programme, location of your campus, etc. All
your pages must be numbered with your student ID and Name on each page.

3. Points in support of the topic (typed Font: Size 12 Times New Roman):

Point 1 for the topic in paragraph form (150-200 words) – 2 marks

Point 2 for the topic in paragraph form (150-200 words) – 2 marks

Point 3 for the topic in paragraph form (150-200 words) – 2 marks

4. Points against the topic (typed Font size 12: Times New Roman) :

Point 1 against the topic in paragraph form (150-200 words) – 2 marks

Point 2 against the topic in paragraph form (150-200 words) – 2marks

Point 3 against the topic in paragraph form (150-200 words) – 2 marks

5. Bibliography - Must contain FOUR or more sources of information or more.


Must use proper referencing. (2 marks)

Note: All online debates must be submitted through the folder provided by the
lecturer on moodle for debates – you can submit before the due date or on the
due date. The folder will open Friday 6 May 0700 and close on Friday 20 May
2359 (15 days). No debate assignments will be accepted outside the folder
provided on moodle. Students are not allowed to email their debates to me.
