One of the basic stages of the teaching career during the undergraduate study is student
teaching. It is the most important phase of the teacher education program where the prospective
teacher practically applied the knowledge, skills, abilities and strategies they acquired in the
classroom.

The student teaching experience provides pre-service teachers the space and opportunity
to learn how to ask important questions about teaching and learning, come to know children and
adolescents by observing and interacting with them consistently over time, apply newly acquired
knowledge, theories, strategies and models in a variety of contexts within and across classrooms,
and experiment with, design and adapt practice according to learners' needs.

During the student teaching experience, pre-service teachers are guided and instructed by
two key individuals - the cooperating or mentor teacher, and the university supervisor. While
both work collaboratively to support the growth and development of the student teacher, each
assumes a very specific role.

During this period, adjustment is craved for it requires a wider understanding, patience and
a deeper appreciation of the teaching process. Wonders are discovered, hardships are overcome
and courage is developed.

Before the off-campus training, they are oriented so that they will be aware of the duties
and responsibilities of a practice teacher.

It was on March 23, 2022 when Mrs. Jennifer M. Montero told them to go to their
designated cooperating school.

They arrived at the school at 7:30 am. She felt nervous and excited because although she
knows who would be her cooperating teacher, it was her first time meeting her and the kind of
pupils she would teach and the different experiences she would encounter.

Mrs. Rjan D. Sabarez oriented the practice teachers. Then after the orientation, the
principal Mrs. Sabarez introduced them to their cooperating teachers.

She observed carefully how things should be in the classroom although there were still no
pupils in that time because they were still preparing for the afce-to-face class that will be on
April 25, 2022.

When the face-to-face class started, she observed the pupil’s attitude and behavior so that
she would know how to deal with them. She was determined to be slightly strict to those students
who are naughty and not attentive during the discussion.

Actual Teaching Activities

Observation helped her to be prepared in the actual teaching situation. She started her
actual teaching after one week of observation; she handled one section. In the beginning of her
actual teaching, she was nervous and excited but she was able to gain more confidence when the
class ended.

During the discussion, she found out that there were inattentive pupils, and they are so
aggressive. They talk a lot and naughty too. So, she thought of using a strategy for the next day
because she was told by her practice teacher to be a substitute of her for a day. She realized that
it is not easy to become a teacher. She has to bear pain and sacrifices.

After so many days of meeting them, she enjoyed the pupils company. Working with
them was a quite difficult task because of their individual difference. But knowing their
individual differences such as varied interest, habits, skills and behaviors is one of the important
factors that make teaching and learning become effective and successful.

When the night is coming, every one of them is busy in making their lesson plan and
visual aids. It is tiring but it has made her feel better especially when the pupils learned from the
lesson she prepared. Her cooperating teacher asked to give her prepared lesson plan to be
checked and evaluated.

Her final demonstration was scheduled on May 16, 2022 at 9:00 to 10:00 am in the
morning. Her topic was entitled “Visualizes and Find the Elapsed Time in Days’’ She prepared
all the materials that she needed in the said activities. Her final demonstration was successfully
done through the help of her cooperating teacher and her pupils.

Practice teaching was a very challenging event of her life because she learned how to
handle learners that were diverse/unique from each other. This off-campus training helped her to
develop her patience and confidence as well as her love for teaching.

Off campus training is not only limited to the classroom teaching but also involves the
second task that the student teachers supposed to undertake. Working with the cooperating
teacher is a vital importance to the intern’s success as future teachers. Smooth and cordial
relationship should always be observed and due respect must be given to every member of the
school.

During her internship in Tandag Central Elementary School, she was given the chance to
do some school works like checking of test papers, worksheets/activities, and projects. Her
cooperating teacher also asked her to monitor the pupils’ safety since it is still pandemic, pupils
needs a lot of reminding to do to follow the safety protocols.

Practice teaching is an integral part of the teacher-education curriculum to prepare

student-teachers to become full-fledged teachers. Through this, students-teachers experience
becoming true teachers. Not only is this important in the teacher-education program because of
the first-hand experiences it provides to student-teachers, but it is also an excellent opportunity
for them to apply what they have learned regarding their profession and their field of
specialization.

Hence, their knowledge of teaching essentials, including lesson planning, students'

discipline management, and students' differences, was not reinforced. Also, this pandemic
intensified personal-inherent challenges like allowances and stress management.

Insights Gained from all the Phase of Teaching Internship

The COVID-19 pandemic has drastically altered the education landscape. Many teachers
have transitioned their classrooms in and out of remote, hybrid and in-person models. Students of
all ages have had to adapt to new methods of instruction and face the unique challenges of
pandemic learning. Using what they learned at NEMSU, student teachers adapted to the “new
normal” and met the challenges of teaching head-on. Since COVID-19, teaching looks different,
and student teachers have risen to the task of instructing in a virtual environment. The student
teachers' work in lesson planning, creating interactive slides, manipulatives and worksheets to
support students has proven their dedication and foretells their effectiveness as teachers.

To give consideration to the learners in rural areas where the internet inaccessible for
online learning, the Modular Learning modality is currently used by all public schools in the
Philippines. Modular learning is a form of distance learning that uses Self-Learning Modules
(SLM) and is one of highly convenient for most of the typical Filipino students. It was also the
most preferred learning system of the majority of parents/guardians for their children. The SLM
is based on the most essential learning competencies (MELCS) provided by the Department of
Education. Parents/guardians can able to support their children in the new learning modality but
some of them are hampered because of the incapability of facilitating and explaining the modules
provided for their children.

Student teachers also benefitted learning from their respective cooperating school.
Teachers are veterans with experience working in different schools. We learn so much about
local districts and are immersed into the teaching experience. In a virtual environment (although
my cooperating school doesn’t have this), educators are finding it harder to build the trust and
understanding needed for a successful teacher-student relationship. It is easier to get to know
students and their learning styles with face-to-face instruction in the classroom. When you can
see their body language, it’s easier to read them and tell when they’re struggling. It is overall
easier to get to know your students in-person. It’s even harder when the students are muted and
have their cameras turned off. Keeping students focused and engaged throughout the day has
also been a challenge for the student teachers. The melding of home and learning environments

has made it much harder for students to stay focused, and the educators are constantly trying new
ways to keep the students engaged in a virtual setting.

Student teaching, especially during a pandemic, is an opportunity that you should take
full advantage of. Try to relax and don’t forget that your mentor teacher, your professors and
your college supervisors are all in your corner and are here to help and support you. It’s a tough
experience, but it’s worth it.

Problems Encountered in the Teaching Internship

Teaching is a phenomenal career – it’s gratifying to make a difference in the youth. Yet,
it’s also a career that comes with its challenges that many aren’t aware of. To the everyday
person, teaching children seems like a breeze. The misconception comes from the idea that
teachers get school holidays and half days – but that’s far from the truth. In addition, while there
are challenges in the classroom, outside of school hours, there are as many challenges.

Regardless of the class or students you are teaching; there will always be a diverse set of
learning abilities that demand your attention. Given that there are eight learning styles, a teacher
has to think outside the box when it comes to meeting the needs of each of their learners.
Different teaching strategies satisfy and stimulate learners in various ways, and as a teacher,
you’re required to put in extra hours and effort to meet their needs. However, once a teacher
develops these strategies, they’re rewarded with empowered and thriving learners. Disciplining
students is a challenge in the classroom and can be a timely, emotionally taxing process. While
you’re guaranteed to have delightful children in your class, it’s not uncommon that you’ll
encounter students who lack good manners and are disrespectful. Disrespectful students can kill
your love of teaching, but you also have to be careful in the way you go about dealing with
disruptions and disciplining students. Ways to combat the lack of manners in your classroom is
to implement justified consequences, get to the root of the problem, get the parents involved and
create intervention plans. Teaching is a job that needs you to be on your feet all day, and there’s
often little time for rest. So on top of being on your feet, you need to be keeping busy bees’
minds active. Creating creative ways to keep little ones entertained is vital to making your job as
a teacher easier. This is where planning and time management comes into play. Time
management involves designing a stimulating schedule and covers the year’s work without
flying past content. It’s no secret that teaching can be a demanding profession. With the constant
pressure to produce great results, it’s not uncommon for teachers to experience burnout. Feeling
drained after working on lesson plans or grading papers, dreading going into work every day,
wishing you could leave your job and find something else to do with your life.

practical approach to make student teacher practice required skills and competencies to become

an efficient teacher. Each teacher education institute implement 1 to 2 months of practice

teaching sessions in schools. However, during the internship programme student teacher faces
several problems related to social, psychological, pedagogical and other miscellaneous
dimensions which can obstruct the achieving of goal and objectives teacher education
programme. Quality in teacher education system cannot be achieved without solving the
problems. An internship is a journey that teaches you a lot but it appears that it can be a path full
of challenges. Such challenges help you to grow both professionally and personally. These
moments are what makes life fascinating: without experiencing the lows, we can’t appreciate the
highs. Discouragement is generally occurring as a result of a failure or when we just don’t reach
our expectations. In those times, take a break and look back to all that you’ve done and how far
you have come from. Just by being here, you achieved a lot. Most things that are worthwhile
necessitate effort and time, so be patient!

Teacher Education involves the policies and procedures designed to equip teachers with
the knowledge and skills they require to teach effectively. Practice Teaching/Teaching Internship
is an integral part in teacher education because it allows student-teachers to apply the theories
into practice. Effective preparation of student-teachers in practical subjects could help them
teach the arts efficiently. As a result, promoting learners’ skills specifically; creative and
practical skills support healthy development. Quality teaching and student learning are tightly
interconnected. Together they form two sides of a triangle. The third side of this triangle is often
overlooked, but is also integral to teaching quality and student learning—quality instruction and
preparation for teachers.

Suggestions:

I suggest Tandag Central Elementary School will provide projectors, smart TV’s and as
well as speakers and microphones for each classroom so there will be an ICT integration.

Reactions:

I am very much pleased with the faculty and staff of the school for they welcomed us
warmly and they are so approachable and we felt like we are part of the family in that short
period of time.

Recommendations:

I recommend the teachers integrate ICT tools for the learners to be more into the lectures.
I felt like there is a need for this and I hope they will be able to provide the things I have
mentioned earlier. Kids prefer visual presentations rather than sitting and listening and that they
find it boring unlike if there are ICT tools integrated in the class or the discussions.
