As the kids walked into the garden, they were awestruck. The appearance was more than one
could imagine. The play equipment wasn’t like anything they’d seen before. Nate, Brook, Tylor
and Chloe were zapped at the beauty. They had been to amusement parks and carnivals before,
but a garden of this sort with such beauty and playground attached was almost unreal.
As soon as their mother told them to go ahead, they ran off as though they leapt to freedom.
They went in different directions, there wasn’t much they had to worry about because they were
being looked out for by the staff. Back home in Washington, there wasn’t much they were
exposed to and considering the political pressure they were under, the kids were always
restricted from everything which was potentially dangerous. Now that they could go and do what
they wanted, they rode on slides, swings, see saws, the ride on the roundabout was an amazing
experience. After they played themselves tired, another amazing treat awaited them in the form
of junk food. Chloe in excitement exclaimed “This is the best day of my life Mom, can we live
here forever?” little did she or the rest of her siblings know this was one of the last moments that
they would get to enjoy freedom as they knew it. They didn’t realise the impact of their father
being elected as the president of the USA.

Being healthy has caught on like social media. Well, one can thank social media and its
coverage of the importance of a healthier lifestyle. Being healthy is not just a concept nowadays,
it’s more of a choice that people are making. It’s not even about looking good, it’s more about
feeling good. A workout whenever done boosts ones spirits and changes the mind-set of people.
Once working out becomes a way of life, it is almost impossible to give up on it. To the extent
that working out becomes a necessity. But “healthiness” has more than just this aspect. Along
with working out comes the importance of eating healthy, this aspect however is best governed
by a dietician or basis one’s own ability to restrain from certain foods and incorporate other
options.
Can we really then say that there are just these 2 aspects to a healthier lifestyle? Well, not
quite, there are quite a few other aspects to this such as sleep patterns, mental health,
socialising etc.
A perfect balance of all these aspects is what makes a healthy individual. Any changes that we
need to make to our lifestyles towards a healthier future will not show us results on an overnight
basis, we ought to let it take its time to let our bodies get used to it. The human body needs a lot
of time to adapt to certain changes we make. Once it is tuned to a certain pattern that is when it
will begin to show the change. As and how you see results, you will be self-motivated to continue
on this new trend that you have begun.

The rescue of the 33 :

The successful rescue of 33 miners from the San José gold and copper mine in Chile on October 13
was a big news story all over the world. In fact, around one billion people watched at least some of it
on TV. The men had been trapped underground for longer than any other miners in history — 69 days
in total. The story began on August 5, when the roof of part of the mine collapsed, trapping the men
700 meters beneath the surface. On August 22, it was discovered that the miners were still alive, and
so the rescue effort began. While the rescuers started drilling a 700 -meter hole that would be wide
enough for the miners to escape through, the miners themselves did a vital job by clearing away the
pieces of rock that fell down the hole during the drilling — about 500 kilograms of rock every hour.
NASA and the Chilean navy together made a rescue capsule (a kind of very narrow elevator) that
would be able to carry the miners, one by one, up to the surface. No miner with a waistline of more
than 90 centimeters would be able to fit inside, however, so a few of them had to do extra exercise to
lose weight. On October 12, the Fénix 2 (Phoenix 2) capsule carried the first member of a team of
rescuers down the mine: they would stay there until all 33 of the miners had been taken to the
surface. Fénix 2 took around 15 minutes to lift each miner to the surface. The first miner arrived
shortly after midnight on October 13, and the last 22 hours later, around 10 p.m. Since the rescue, the
miners have had to get used to the fact that they are now celebrities, with journalists lining up to talk to
them. Suddenly they are receiving VIP treatment: Manchester United and Real Madrid, for examp le,
have invited all 33 of them to travel to Europe to watch soccer games at their stadiums. As for Fénix 2,
it soon became a tourist attraction, going on display in the Chilean capital, Santiago. The cost of the
rescue was probably somewhere between 10 and 20 million US dollars, but anyone who saw the
moving pictures of the miners reaching the surface and seeing their loved ones again — coming
“back from the dead,” as some newspapers described it — would agree that its end result was
priceless..

Read this historical fact and answer the questions – Past simple and continuous:

The October 8, 1871, Peshtigo Fire in Peshtigo, Wisconsin, is the conflagration that caused the
most deaths by fire in United States history. On the same day as the Peshtigo and Chicago
fires, the cities of Holland and Manistee, Michigan, across Lake Michigan, also burned, and the
same
fate befell Port Huron at the southern end of Lake Huron. By the time it was over, 1,875 square
miles of forest had been consumed and twelve communities were destroyed. Between 1,200 and
2,500 people are thought to have lost their lives.

The fire was so intense it jumped several miles over the waters of Green Bay, and burned parts
of the Door Peninsula, as well as jumping the Peshtigo River itself to burn on both sides of the
inlet town. Surviving witnesses reported that the firestorm generated a tornado that threw rail
cars and houses into the air. Many of the survivors of the firestorm escaped the flames by
immersing themselves in the Peshtigo River, wells, or other nearby bodies of water. Some
drowned while others succumbed to hypothermia in the frigid river.
Answer the below questions based on this passage above:

1) What happened on Oct 8, 1871?

2) What was the damage caused by the fires that day?
