Pinoy pop or P-pop refers to a popular contemporary music in the Philippines originating from the OPM genre. With its beginnings in the 1970s, Pinoy pop is a growing genre in year of 2020s. Through the 1990s to the 2000s, OPM pop was regularly showcased in the live band scene. Who are the singers who became popular during the period to the present time? What kinds of songs were created? It was a mix of rock, folk and ballads making political use of music similar to early hip hop but transcending class. The music was a "conscious attempt to create a Filipino national and popular culture" and it often reflected social realities and problems. D. How has western music influenced Pinoy Pop? Westernized folk practices in the Philippines date back to the Spanish Colonial Period, which lasted nearly three centuries, from 1521 to 1898. The establishment of a colonial state, as well as the influence of Roman Catholicism, influenced what would become the dominant, "lowland-Christian" Filipino society. In these ceremonies, music evolved to dialectically integrate Westernized elements with native/indigenous style. Filipino dance music was influenced by Spanish and European dancing styles. During the American Invasion and Pacification at the turn of the twentieth century, Hispanized Filipino music represented the suppressed nationalist spirit by the new colonial administration. Another dramatic style imported from Spain, the zarzuela, became an important genre that conveyed similar nationalist emotions. E. What is OPM? Original Pilipino Music, also known as Original Pinoy Music, Original Philippine Music, or OPM for short, initially referred to Philippine pop music, notably ballads, popular in the Philippines from the late 1970s to the present. In the 1970s, OPM singers like as Rico Puno Jr., Ryan Cayabyab, and Celeste Legaspi led the way, while in the 1980s and 1990s, Regine Velasquez, Sharon Cuneta, Martin Nievera, Pops Fernandes, and many others led the way. "Anak" (Filipino for kid, or more specifically my son or daughter) is a Tagalog song penned by Filipino folk artist Freddie Aguilar. It reached the finals of the inaugural Metropop Song Festival in Manila in 1978. It became a worldwide smash and was translated into 27 languages. The lyrics are on Filipino family values. Five years later, realizing and regretting his sins, Freddie wrote "Anak," a ballad of remorse and atonement to his parents. He returned home and begged forgiveness from his parents, who embraced him with open arms.
