MODULE1 ACTIVITY
3. Define service learning and explain advantages to students, teachers, and
communities. Explain two advantages to each group.
As a student myself, I can say that service learning has an advantage to students, along the lines,
A. Students: Broaden your knowledge and critical thinking for social change- it connects student
learning in the classroom with real-world experiences in the community. Students who participate
in it are more deeply engaged in their local communities, gain practical skills, develop their career
and personal interests, and are usually more engaged citizens. The courses are usually most
directly tied to social science courses (for example: political science, sociology, environmental
studies and psychology) and pre-professional courses (for example: education, social work and
business).
B. Teachers: Encourage and enabling students to collaborate- In essence, service learning describes a
way of teaching and learning that benefits not only the students but the surrounding community as
well. Additionally, service learning is an amazing way for teachers to learn about fundamental
concepts such as giving and collaborating. It gives them more insights and valuable insights into
the community and practical application.
C. Community: Improving education and environment- Through the improvement of education in
the community, it prepares people for the world and for the future, due to the fact that, It teaches
students to about the environment, which makes it our obligation and our life purpose to sustain
and improve the environment.
Indirect Service-Learning:
Working indirectly with individuals and organizations to address a community issue or need.
Examples:
Revitalizing buildings and structures
Creating a community garden
Creating promotional materials for local organizations.
Direct Service Training:
Working directly with individuals and organizations to address a community issue or need.
Examples:
Tutoring other students and adults
Serving meals to the homeless
Volunteering for disaster services
Advocacy Service- Training- Planning, conducting, and/or creating awareness initiatives and events to
address a community issue or need.
Examples:
Bringing in a guest speaker and discussion on a topic of interest in a community (Author of White
Rage)
By reflecting on my service experience through discussions and interactions it helps you feel both
challenged and supported. It builds me a deeper connection with the community. It also challenge
attitudes, beliefs, assumptions, privileges, prejudices, and stereotypes of mine.
