1. Possibility and impossibility

 They  could come  by car. (= Maybe they will come by car.) = Ei pot veni cu mașina.
 They  could be  at home. (= Maybe they are at home.= Ei pot fi acasă.
 can  este folosit pentru a face declarații generale despre ceva ce este posibil.
 It  can be  very cold here in winter.  (= It is sometimes very cold here in winter.)=Poate să fie foarte frig iarna.
 You  can  easily  get  lost in this town. (= People often get lost in this town.)=Te poți rătăcii foarte ușor în acest

 They  can't  dance  very well.- Ei nu pot dansa foarte bine.
 can and can't  sunt utilizate pentru preciza abilitatea de a face ceva la un moment dat în prezent sau viitort
 I  can see  you.-Te pot vedea
 Help! I  can't breathe.- Ajutor! Nu pot respira.
 could and couldn't pentru a vorbi de trecut:
 She  could  speak  several languages.-Putea vorbi câteva limbi.
 They  couldn't  dance  very well.-Ei nu puteau să danseze foarte bine.
 could have  se foloseste când cineva a avut oportunitatea sau abilitatea să facă ceva dar nu au făcut-o
 She  could have learned  Swahili, but she didn't want to.-Ar fi putut să învețe Swahili, dar nu a învățat.
 I  could have danced  all night.  [but I didn't] Aș fi putut dansa toată noaptea.
3. Permission
 can  cere permisiunea de a face ceva
 Can I ask  a question, please?-Pot să întreb o întrebare?
 Can we go  home now?-Putem să mergem acasă acum
 could  se polosește într-un mod  can:
 Could I ask  a question please?-Aș putea/pot să pun o îintrebare?
 Could we go  home now?-Putem să mergem acasă?
 can utilizat pentru a exprima permisiunea
 You  can go  home now.-Poți să mergi acasă acum
 You  can borrow  my pen if you like.-Poți să împrumuți pixul dacă vrei
 can pentru a spune că cineva are permisiunea de a face ceva:
 We  can go out  whenever we want.-Putem să mergem afară când vrem
 Students  can travel  for free.-Studenții pot călătorii pe gratis.
 can't pentru a exprima faptul ca cineva nu are permisiunea: 
 You can't go  home yet.-Nu poți să mergi acasă încă.

4. Requests
 could you -pentru a spune sau cere cuiva să facă ceva, într-un mod politicos
 Could you take  a message, please?Poți să iei un mesaj,te rog?
 Could I have  my bill, please? Can you take  a message, please?=Pot să am nota , vă rog
5. Offers
 can I …  -pentru a face o ofertă
 Can I help  you?-Pot să vă ajut?
 Can I do  that for you?-Pot să fac aia pentru tine?
 I can  ...  or I could ...pot fi folosite când te oferi să faci ceva pentru cineva
 I can do  that for you if you like.-Pot să fac aia pentru tine
 I could give  you a lift to the station.-Pot să te duc la stație.
6. Suggestions
 could pentru a face sugestii:
 We  could meet  in the city centre.-Ne putem întâlni în centru
 You  could eat out  tonight.-Am putea/putem să mâncăm în oraș diseară.
