Literacy skills help students gain knowledge through reading
as well as using media and technology. These skills also
help students create knowledge through writing as well as
developing media and technology. The ability to learn how
Literacy skills to learn is a key characteristic of those who are information
literate; i.e., those who know how to learn because they
know how knowledge is organized, how to find information,
and how to use information in such a way that others can
learn from them.
In order for every learner to address the challenges of the
century, he/she has to develop life and career skills. Life and
career skills are enhanced in school as part of the learning
outcomes. Life and career skills equip learners to thrive in

.2. Complete the table below by describing the 21 st century literacy skills.
Literacy Description
Information literacy is knowing how to learn. It is knowing
how to find information, evaluate it, and use it wisely and
effectively. We have to know how to learn – to be lifelong
learners. Information Literacy encompasses knowledge of
one’s information concerns and needs, and the ability to

identify, locate, evaluate, organize and effectively create,
use and communicate information to address issues or
problems at hand; it is a prerequisite for participating in the
Information Society, and is part of the basic, human right of
lifelong learning.”
Media literacy is the ability to identify different types of
media and understand the messages they’re sending. And
all media shares one thing: Someone created it. And it was
created for a reason. Understanding that reason is the basis
of media literacy. Thus Media literacy involves
Media literacy understanding the many ways that information is produced
and distributed. Students’ use of media has far outstripped
educational use, and students will continue to adopt new
media long before teachers can crate curricula about it.
Students need to learn how to critically analyze and
evaluate messages coming to them through any medium.
Technological literacy is the ability to responsibly use
appropriate technology to communicate; solve problems;
access, manage, integrate, evaluate, design and create
information to improve learning in all subject areas; and
acquire lifelong knowledge and skills in the 21 st century.
Technology literacy involves understanding how to evaluate

new information using the power of technology. However,
technology literacy is not a cure-all for education, but early
indicators attest that it can help to reconstruct our
classrooms with authentic activities that promote
collaboration and effective tools for interpretative skills,
information management and open inquiry.

ASSESSMENT TASK
1. In your own words and in not less than 3 sentences, explain each of the life and career
skills
a) Flexibility
Flexibility is indeed important in today’s world. Everything changes and will continue to
change. And we can’t always expect that everything will fall into our neatly packaged way of
how things should be done. Flexibility is, at its core, a survival skill- we cannot get along in
life without it. If we do not develop this skill, we will fall prey to the winds of life and be a
victim of change and adversity.
b) Leadership
Effective leadership is almost always one of the main and primary drivers for growth,
development and innovation. Leadership means creating and planning, securing resources,
and looking out for and improving errors. Leadership is about motivating people to work
together and cooperate with themselves and in some cases, other teams, to achieve a
certain goal. Effective leadership shines not only when the going is good, but also (even
more so, sometimes) when things are rough.
c) Initiative
It’s about taking prompt action to accomplish objectives, taking action achieve goals
beyond what is required, being proactive. Without Initiative, Leaders are simply workers in
leadership positions. Taking initiative is a form of self-empowerment. For flourishing the
quality in our attitude is vital. A positive attitude brings strength energy, motivation, and
initiative. “Always challenge Yourself”. Try to set up new challenges for your career every
day, week, month and year. Initiative is doing the right thing without being told.
d) Productivity
It’s important to note that “being productive” and “being busy” are two very different things.
Some of the most successful people in the world famously only worked for a few hours a
day, yet what they accomplished during these periods was vast. Because productivity is a
philosophy of life, a state of mind. Being efficient means doing, at every moment, what we
consciously choose to do and not what we feel we are doing forced by circumstances.
Productivity means adopting an attitude for continued improvement.
e) Social skills
Social skills are important because they are the foundation for having positive relationships
with others with your family, friends, and for your career. Social skills allow you to connect
with other people on a level that is important in life so you can have more in-depth

relationships with others. People with poor social skills won’t be able to interact properly
with people, especially with strangers. As a result, it will be difficult for them to meet new
people and expand their network.
REFLECTION
1. Make a reflection. From the Module on 21st Century skill categories, I realized that . .
Most people will learn something new at some point in their daily routine just by talking with
other people, browsing the internet based on personal interest, reading the newspaper, or
engaging in personal interest. However, if making more effort to learn something new is
important for either personal, family, or career reasons, or there is a need for a more
organized structure, then here are some steps to get started. Continuous learning in this
21st century is your self-motivated persistence in acquiring knowledge and competencies in
order to expand your skillset and develop future opportunities. It forms part of your personal
and professional development in an effort to avoid stagnation and reach your full potential.
Knowledge is now at everyone’s fingertips. Those not making use of this opportunity will
remain where they are – their capabilities diminishing in importance.
Today, the corporate world is continuously evolving, with industries and jobs expanding at a
rapid rate. Job descriptions change and skill sets that used to be needed for a particular job
may not be enough nowadays. Whether pursuing personal interests and passions or
chasing professional ambitions, lifelong learning can help us to achieve personal fulfillment
and satisfaction. It recognizes that humans have a natural drive to explore, learn and grow
and encourages us to improve our own quality of life and sense of self-worth by paying
attention to the ideas and goals that inspire us.
