Prefixes and Suffixes

A Prefix is a letter or a group of letters which appears before a root word. They form a
new word and can change its meaning too. For example, the prefix ‘un-‘ when added to
the word root word ‘kind’, forms a new word ‘unkind’, meaning ‘not kind’.
Some of the common Prefixes are:- un-, im-, pre-, dis-, over-, under-.

Prefix Usage Meaning


Un- untidy not neat
Im- impolite not polite
Dis- discover to find out
Pre- preheat heat something before
Over- overjoyed very happy
Under- underwater below the surface of the
water
Re- redo do again or differently

I. Add a prefix to the root word to create a new word. The root word is given in the bracket.

A suffix is a group of letters which is added after the root word and can change its
meaning. For example, on adding the letters ‘-ion’ to the word ‘act’ gives us the word
‘action’. Some of the suffixes used are :- ‘-ment’, ‘-less’, ‘-ful’, etc.
