Diagnostic Writing Assessment

We hear it all the time. “There is no one else like you,” or “You are one of a kind.”
Clichés? Yes, but there is truth in these overused sentiments. You are special. Think
about it. No one else in the world has experienced the same life events or had the exact
feelings and thoughts that you have encountered, and these are the very fibers of who we
are, those defining moments that make even twins unique individuals.

Consider some of those defining moments in your life, those events that have shaped
your values, your likes and dislikes, even your fears and dreams. Defining moments can
be some of the most wonderful things that ever happen to us, or they can be the most
tragic or difficult. What makes you who you are?

In a two-page minimum narrative, catalogue the significant moments which define you.
The paper should be double spaced, use standard margins and Times-New Roman 12
point font. Please proofread, edit, and revise, giving your best efforts to produce a
proficient piece of writing. These narratives are not shared with others.

“Your life is an open book.”
“In a small town, everyone knows everything about everybody.”

Right?

Not really. You may sit beside people at lunch everyday who have no idea what your life
at home is like. You could play on a team with friends who don’t know how you feel
about certain things. Perhaps you live in a house with people who are clueless about
what’s important to you or who haven’t the slightest notion what you are up to.

IF YOU REALLY KNEW ME, YOU WOULD KNOW…

Brainstorm to generate five “If you really knew me…” statements.

Any of them worth writing about?

In a two-page minimum narrative, discuss one of these issues. You may choose to
discuss a variety of issues, or you may focus on one in particular. The paper should be
double spaced, use standard margins and a standard 12 point font. Please proofread,
edit, and revise, giving your best efforts to produce a distinguished piece of writing.
These narratives are not shared with others.
