IR Spectroscopy Notes

(1) Infrared spectroscopy uses infrared radiation to produce vibrations in bonds or changes in bond angles which correspond to absorptions in the infrared spectrum. (2) The infrared spectrum provides information to identify functional groups and determine molecular structure in organic compounds. (3) Factors like electronegativity, conjugation, hydrogen bonding affect the vibrational frequency which is proportional to the bond strength. This allows identification of substances from their infrared spectra.
