Module Four-4

This document discusses how to organize paragraphs when writing. It states that paragraphs introduce new ideas or develop the central theme by adding arguments, and that each paragraph should have a focus, defined purpose and unity. It then describes different styles of paragraph writing, including starting with a topic sentence, placing the topic sentence in the middle or end, and some paragraphs not needing a topic sentence. It concludes by asking the reader to identify any difficulties in writing so the next session can be tailored to address those problems.

Module Four - Session Four

Writing Paragraphs
Manideepa Patnaik

As you organize your writing units, you will have to organize your paragraphs too. This session will give
you an idea about how to organize paragraphs for each writing unit. All writing units would have
multiple paragraphs though there can be some writing units that can be written in one long paragraph
or a passage. There is a lot of difference between a passage and a paragraph. I talk about paragraphs
here. When I will edit your chapters, I will convert some paragraphs to paragraphs and merge some
paragraphs to passages. At that time, I will send need based sessions on passage and paragraph writing
again.

Basic character of a paragraph

A paragraph by definition introduces a new idea or develops the central theme by adding a new
argument. This gives physical and mental breaks from reading the passage. The main idea is called the
topic sentence. The topic statement can be a generalization, a problem or a question, which can be
stated in one long sentence or one or two sentences. Depending on the style of writing (as we saw in
our abstract writing sessions), the topic statement can occur at the head of the paragraph or tail or
centre. Every paragraph must have a focus, well defined purpose and unity.

Styles of paragraph writing

Starting a sentence with a paragraph often gives the reader clarity from the beginning of reading the
text. From the point of view of writing, it helps you to construct your argument with clarity and express
the central idea with conviction.
Placing the topic sentence in the middle or end of the paragraph requires skilled writing and this is very
idiosyncratic difficult skill. The advantage of placing the topic statement at the end is that it makes the
conclusion looks more effective and argumentative.

There can be some paragraphs that do not have any topic statement at all. These paragraphs are made
just to break up the monotony.

Developing a paragraph

Please write to me where you find difficulties in getting started with writing. Accordingly I will develop
this session. Recall in session one of module one, I had told you to write your basic thesis idea in 50 to
100 words. That’s called a topic sentence. Then I had told you to write an abstract about your main
thesis. Some of you had done it and some hadn’t. Over the months, you must have done a number
writings and presentations. If you can tell me your individual problems then I can address them together
and develop my next session.
