Practice Questions For TT2
1. From 6 positive and 8 negative numbers, 4 numbers are chosen at random (without
replacement) and multiplied. What is the probability that the product is positive?
2. If A, B and C are any 3 events such that P(A) = P(B) = P(C) = 1/4,
P ( A ∩ B )=P ( B ∩C )=0 ; P ( C ∩ A ) = 1/8. Find the probability that at least 1 of the
events A, B and C occurs
3. A and B alternately through a pair of dice. A wins if he throws 6 before B throws 7
and B wins if he throws 7 before A throws 6. If A begins, show that his chance of
winning is 30/61.
4. An urn contains 10 white and 3 black balls. Another urn contains 3 white and 5 black
balls. Two balls are drawn at random from the first urn and placed in the
second urn and then 1 ball is taken at random from the lather. What is the
probability that it is a white ball?
5. The contents of urns I,II, III are as follows: 2 white, 3 black and 4 red balls ; 3 white ,
2 black and 2 red balls and 4 white , 1 black and 3 red balls. An urn is chosen at
random and two balls are drawn. They happen to be white and red. What is the
probability that they come from urns I, II or III?
6. In a coin tossing experiment, if the coin shows head, I dice is thrown and the result is
recorded. But if coin shows tail, 2 dice are thrown and their sum is recorded. What is
the probability that the recorded number will be 2?
7. There are 3 true coins and 1 false coin with ‘head’ on both sides. A coin is chosen at
random and tossed 4 times. If ‘head’ occurs all the 4 times, what is the probability
that the false coin has been chosen and used?
8. For a certain binary, communication channel, the probability that a transmitted ‘0’ is
received as a ‘0’ is 0.95 and the probability that a transmitted ‘1’ is received as ‘1’ is
0.9. If the probability that a ‘0’ is transmitted is 0.4, find the probability that (i) a ‘1’is
received and (ii) a ‘1’ was transmitted given that a ‘1’ was received.
15. X is normally distributed and the mean of X is 12 and S.D. is 4. Find out the
probability of the following
a) X≥20 , X≤20 , 0≤X≤12
b) Find x’ when P(X>x’)=.24
c) Find x0’ and x1’ when P(x0’<X<x1’)=.50 and P(X>x1’)=.25
16. X is a normal variate with mean 30 and SD 5.Find the probabilities that
a) 26≤X≤40
b) X≥45
c) │X-30│>5
17. In an examination , it is laid down a student passes if he secures 30 percent or more
marks. He is placed in the first, second or third division according as he secures 60%
or more marks, between 45% and 60% marks and marks between 30% and 45%
respectively. He gets distinction in case he secures 80% or more marks. It is noticed
from the result that 10% of the students failed in the examination, whereas 5% of
them obtained distinction. Calculate the percentage of students placed in the second
division.( Assume normal distribution of marks)
18. In a normal distribution 31% items are under 45 and 8% are over 64. Find the mean
and standard Deviation. Also find the % of items lying between 30 and 45.
19. In a normal distribution 10.03% of the items are under 25 kg weight and 89.97% of
the items are under 70 kg weight. Find the mean and standard Deviation of the
distribution.
