Describe a place

Describe:

- a city (you’ve visisted)

- a city (you would like to visit)
- somewhere you went on holiday
- a historic place
- a river, lake or sea
- a journey (where you went)

All of these a description of places, and we can probably prepare one idea for one description that
will work for any of these questions. We might just have to change it a little bit.

Besides, another three that are slightly different asking you to describe a more specific place are:

- a shop
- a restaurant
- a street market

You will probably be asked these simple things about that place:

- which place
- where
- what you did / can do there
- why you like it

The preparation tip:

- think of a theme for any place

- start with easy adjectives
- search for better words and phrases

Interesting / fun city ‘theme’:

 lively, bustling, hectic, thriving

 cosmopolitan, multicultural
 fascinating, unique
 a special atmosphere
 sightseeing, entertainment
 an unforgettable/ a memorable experience
 enjoyed every minute
 the time flew by
 lost track of time
 endless things to see and do
 it was over too quickly

Historic ‘theme’:

 old buildings, palaces, statues

 ancient
 monuments
 landmarks
 where great events took place
 connection to the past
 full of history
 a rich cultural heritage

Friendly ‘theme’

 welcoming, inviting
 warm, approachable
 polite
 thoughtful, attentive
 great atmosphere
 make you feel at home
 the service was excellent
 nothing was too much to ask
 an unforgettable evening

Try to develop a theme around the word ‘friendly’, think of other things that could be related.

 Example, stories which use the theme that you prepared.

E.g. The city was interesting:

We visited famous landmarks and attractions, such as… (names)
We lost track of time because … (enjoying ourselves so much)

The restaurant was friendly:

The waiters really made us feel special. They even surprised us with a birthday cake…

It’s very easy to keep speaking for a long time if you have an example or a story to incorporate in
your speech.
