Focal Length of Diverging Lens Using Converging Lens

This document describes an experiment to measure the focal length of a diverging lens using a converging lens. The experiment involves: 1) Forming a sharply focused image using a converging lens and screen, and measuring the lens to image distance. 2) Placing the diverging lens between the converging lens and screen, and adjusting the screen position until a focused image is seen. Distances between the lenses and from the diverging lens to screen are measured. 3) Repeating measurements for different lens separations, plotting reciprocal distances and determining focal length from the graph intercepts. The average focal length value is reported.

Set upthe object O, converging lens Lr, and screen S, so that a sharply focused image I, is formed
or.rthe screen S. which should be about 50cm lrom the lens. Measure the distance r'from Lr to the
image I1 (Fig. 3a(ri)).
Place the diverging lens Lz between L1 and the screen. about 5cm from the screen. and move the
scrcen until. at I:, the image is again sharply locused. Measure the distance,x betueen the tu'o Ienses.
and the distance u from the dircrging lens L: to the screen at I2 (Fi_e. 34(h))
Repeat the measurements for. say. four more values ol .x and u. having moved L; nearer to L1.
Note that Lz and Ir will be separated by a distance equal to the local length ol L1 rihen it becomes
impossible to obtain a locused image.

ITRRORS

Each measurement of length is subject to: (1) error in setting the zero of the scale at the required
point; (2) error in reading the scale.

The maximum difference between the average value olf and the individual values obtained for I is
a fair measure of the order olaccuracy. The accuracy olthe graphical method can be lound as explained
on p. 9.
