7E Model Lesson Plan

1. The document provides a lesson plan for teaching 8th grade science students about the particle nature of matter. 2. The lesson plan includes objectives to describe the particle nature of matter and explain the properties of solids, liquids, and gases. 3. Several hands-on activities and assessments are outlined to help students understand the key concepts, including distinguishing examples of matter from non-matter and identifying the states of matter and their properties.

GRADE 8- SCIENCE
LESSON EXEMPLAR

Code S8MT-IIIa-b-8 Number of Hours: 2

Domain Grade 8
Cluster Science 8: Matter
Lesson: The Particle Nature of Matter
The learners demonstrate an understanding of the particle nature of matter as a
Standard: basis for explaining properties, physical changes, and structure of substances and
mixtures.
References: Science 8 Module

D OBJECTIVES:
e The learners should be able to:
f 1. Describe the particle nature of matter; and
i 2. Explain the properties of solids, liquids, and gases based on the particle nature of
n matter
i
n ASSESSMENT: KEY POINTS:
g ● A scoring rubric will be prepared for ● Familiarize the concept of matter
S the written activities. ● Distinguish the properties of the states
u ● A formative assessment will be of matter
c administered ● Explain how water behaves in its
c different states

ELICIT: 10 minutes Materials and Teacher’s notes

At the beginning of the lesson, the learners will be ● Powerpoint Presentation of
given 15-item pre-test questions. Afterward, they will the test questions
check their own paper to have them assess their own (The teacher will dictate the answers
prior knowledge about the topic to be discussed. on checking the test.)

L ENGAGE: 15 minutes
e Images of chair, plates, air, water, wooden plank,
a mud, sea, and bird will be shown to the learners. ● Powerpoint Presentation
r The learners will be asked about the common
n properties that the pictures have.
i They will also be asked to define mass, volume, and
n matter.
g
C
y EXPLORE: 30 minutes
c The learners will have an activity to determine which
l is matter and which is not. This activity aims to let the ● Activity Sheets
e learners identify the examples of matter and
distinguish the properties of matter from non-matter.
The activity will have three parts.
Part A. Learners will have to draw a heart shape
under the column “Does the sample have mass?” if
the sample have mass, otherwise, draw a diamond.
Processing Question:
1. Which of the samples have measurable
mass?
Part B. Learners have to draw a smiley face if the
sample occupies space and a plain circle if not.
Processing Question:
1. Which samples occupy space?
Part C. A check mark will be placed aligned with the
sample if it is an example of matter and an X mark if
not.
Processing Questions:
1. Is smoke an example of matter? Does it have
mass? Does it occupy space?
2. Are toys and leaves examples of matter? Do
they occupy space? Do they have mass?
3. In the activity given, how do you identify the
sample as matter?
4. What is your basis in identifying such
samples?

EXPLAIN: 10 minutes
The teacher will discuss the concept of matter.
Images will be shown to furtherly describe matter, its ● Powerpoint Presentation
properties, and the three states of matter(solid, liquid,
gas).

ELABORATE: 30 minutes
Another three different activities will be given to the
learners. ● Activity sheets
1. The learners will have to choose the letter of
the correct description of the particle nature of
matter from the box that characterizes the
given samples.
2. The learners are tasked to analyze the given
situations then answer the corresponding
questions which are related to the three states
of matter.
3. They will be asked to match the state of
matter to its property by writing the letter of
the correct answers.

EVALUATE:20 minutes
The teacher will read a question and the learners can
volunteer to answer them, if no one wants to do so, ● Powerpoint Presentation of
the teacher will do the call. The students will be the questions to be asked
graded accordingly which will serve as their graded
recitation. Every student present will be given a
chance to answer a question and be graded.

EXTEND: 10 minutes
A list of materials will be provided to the learners,
they have to group them according to their
states(solid, liquid, gase). ● Powerpoint Presentation of
the list of materials
